I have one female (was told male at first but recently female) carpintis, woke up this morning and its in black breeding dress... Only other normal cichlid in there is a female gymno balzani (trying to find her a cold water tank home but having trouble, shopkeep told me it wouldn't need a cool down which was corrected once I asked on here)

What the hell is going on? Lol I want to hybridize this specimen with festae so its getting frisky a lil too early

Its digging pits all over the place! Should I put it behind a barrier to lessen the chance of it killing something? I never had this happen before

You can if you want, female cichlids can go into breeding mode without a male present or other fish for that matter. She male kill the other fish present or just terrorize it.

Oof yeah I think I'll throw a divider in she's nipping at my bichirs and liplocking with my Geo. And attempting to lip lock with my peacock bass but is getting destroyed when she tests him. I know she has my wolf high strung he keeps whipping around. My tank is very unpredictable right now haha

That's because the stock is not compatible. What size tank? Also a lot of cichlids go through a breeding mode when they hit sexual maturity even when there isn't a mate present.

In a 70 long, she must have just hit maturity because the only other owner of her is a friend of mine who raised it from 2 inch and he said he never saw her like this, she's only 3-4 inch right now and only temporarily here. At first we were told it was a male, and it was going to go in his 120 once he sells off his mbuna to attempt to breed it to a festae female.

Now we are looking to trade it for a male, since we already have and nice larger female festae for it, looking to get either an Escondido or Thai . He supposed to be getting rid of the last of them this week, he was avoiding trading in to the LFS since they are nicer wilds but now with her abandoning her normally pretty peaceful attitude he's just gonna suck it up lol and hold onto her until we figure it out

I think it is very unlikely that CA and SA cichlids would interbreed. I don't think I have even seen any SA hybrids like you would in African or CA cichlids. Also with the stock you have they have different water requirements, and that will throw breeding off.

Festae are the exception to the CA SA incompatibility, he is changing his params to fit the new worlds.

Its been said to me on here festae are basically a CA cichlid living in SA

I had a female Festae pair up with a male Texas (Cyan) once. They cleared a space, chased other fish away, but never produced fry.

Don't know about cyan but there are confirmed festae x carpintis hybrids in the big hybrid cichlid thread
