Lets look at this from a different angle, instead of comparing crimes punishable by law and how lightly some owners have chosen to treat said athletes and look at donald sterling in its entirety as it involves the nba only.
.315 winning percentage in 20+ years in a years as a owner in a major market. Worse EVER in history for any major sport. allegations of discrimination for years from employees (i feel no pity for them, they couldve found another employer). His illegally obtained recordings by a third party has created a scandal that has caused sponsors to drop them, players to threaten to sit out games, public protests being organized and threats from fans not to attend games (likely would've been bought up by other fans anyways but bad enough publicity to scare sponsors). Essentially making his illegal obtained recordings bad for business.
Now, if this same thing had happen to a regular joe owner that was well liked, he'd likely be suspended for a limited time and fined and given a second chance. Donald sterlings track record AS an owner has the nba already wanting to get rid of him. This scandal is finally the tool they're trying to exploit to make it happen. The guy made his own bed, why cant you let him sleep in it? It has nothing to do with you or i losing a job because of a conversation we had with our spouse. Its a not well liked man being kicked out of his privileged club because HIS peers finally found a reason to do it.
Lets drop the bs about freedom of speech and invasion of privacy. It wasnt invaded by the nba and the first amendment isnt under attack. Just a prick being kicked out of his club for being a prick. We'll see how it all plays out in the end but i strongly believe his checkered past is why hes being dealt with so harshly.
