7'x12' Plywood Build For My Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive still been creepin on the build haha...i dont think u need a whole ss window frame....do u plan on drilling the acrylic at all? Imo u just need 4 bolts in the corners to hold the glass up during a water change. The ahdesive will hold the window to liner no prob. My 650 window is just free standing with adhesive alone, no bolts. U could also use a piece of ss angle iron on the inside top lip of the window frame to hold the glass in, that way the angle is bolted to the wood on top and theres no bolts needed through the acrylic.

Being the tank will have a drip so the water will not fall from water changes what do you think about using a harder rubber strip along with the adhesive?

Just curious did sanitred not interest you ? It's flexible but is supossw to get hard as tire rubber. Be stronger than the Firestone liner

Using the liner will make this a ton easier to move. I will be able to break the entire tank down and set it back up versus having to move it in one piece. I have other plans for when we move.:D

Not sure if u remember some of nolapete's old threads but he had a friend who swore by his liner tanks. He used a rubber gasket and dow corning silicone to make his bonds. No bolts and glass windows free floating a foot or two from the tank bottom. He first rubber cemented the gasket to the liner for a bond, then dow corning siliconed the glass to the rubber gasket for the final seal. I chose to make my gasket completly out of hutton products gold label silicone, it took 12 tubes for a 29"x96" window and it was expensive. The gasket method may be cheaper using less silicone but thats about the only reason why id choose that way. No advantages in strength really. Again...my 650 window is freestanding and ive never had a problem but the worry is always there i guess like anything else. I think u should just use 3m5200 silicone, free stand the window and possibly "cap" it off in place up top with one piece of angle. Heck a 2' piece of angle holding it up will be all u need with a few bolts into ur wood.

Well at least there is a small audience still following along.

As always thanks for the advice.

Man! I'm so jealous. It looking great so far. You mind telling me what is the cost for materials so far?

As of right now here is a break down.
All of the 2x4 material - 425.00
Screws - 90.00
Pond liner - 300.00
4'×8'×.75" acrylic window - 325.00
Still need pumps, sump, heating and lighting and silicone. Probably missing a few things. For a tank this size you can't beat the price. With framed walls instead of stacked walls it would be even cheaper.

How's it going lol

Still here. Update soon.

I hope I'm really inspired to swing a liner tank

There has to be something that's not as expensive as the gold aquariums silicone or the 5200 stuff , just no one has found it lol

I've talked to Wednesday some. And as he said. Liners are a leap anyways. It's jut the window part that makes me worried

Impressive! I'm subscribed!

Quick question, any plans to screw in the acrylic or just silicone?
