Large Fish in Square Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is what I would do if I had that tank: Set up a centerpiece consisting of large rocks, driftwood, an a few plants right in the center of the tank, right up through the surface; get a bunch of schooling fish that maxes out at about the 12" range; this gives the fish a perception that they are swimming in an endless waterway and they'll keep moving constantly. I would personally do something like clown loaches, silver dollars, and a large school of tiger barbs or tetras

I LOVE the centerpiece idea! I'll have my turtles in there too, so i could possibly incorporate that into their above tank platform. Beautiful koi btw they have SO many variations and colors! :) Well, since i prefer to stick with native fish... My previously planned tankmate choices should b fine then. Was going to have black crappies, central stonerollers and pumpkinseed sunfish. I'll just take channel cat off the list :( So would the general consensus b that population would b fine in there? EVENTUALLY I'm getting 1000gal. But that's multiple years down the road. I'll save my massive catfish for then. I'd b happy with bass as my monster fish :D

A tank that is 6' by 6' could handle a large mouth. 20" height is pretty low but thats a pretty awesome sized tank.

yeah I think that's an awesome tank size too! but It's an unusual tank. Well it's just my opinion then if the large mouth can go then he's in luck :headbang2

Previous owner breeds rays apparently. He used it for that. He said it's a custom tank. So that might b y it has such weird dimensions. SHOULD b going to pick it up Sunday :D Here's one of the pics he showed me. I'm HOPING it's still in great condition like the pic suggests. Idk when that was taken though. Fingers crossed!

I have a 6'x6'x20" tank. I'm wondering opinions on keeping large fish in a tank of those dimensions? Specifically I'll b keeping lrgmouth bass, channel catfish, and a few 10in fish. But I'm concerned about having such large fish in a short tank, i don't want to stuff big fish in a tank that isn't appropriate for them. Thanks for advice.

A channel cat would work fine imo. They max out at about 3 foot in aquariums. The member hoyo12 on here has a 7+ year old channel in a 150 gallon. Which has really bad dimensions on it. You will be fine.

Fish don't "max out" in aquariums. I am not a fan of saying fish have different max sizes in aquarium vs the wild.
