What do you think of our Midas.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is a Midas purchased I believe from Jeff Rapps stock. The gentleman we bought him from spent a lot of money bringing in pure bred stock and I trust what he told us. Just what is the fish you mentioned T-roy?

Looks great !!

oh i do believe what it is. But just wondering. Because I think ampholophus Xilouenses are the ones usually more white like that Too.. How does J Rapps or other big dogs tell them apart?

Midas come in many color forms his mate is an orange creamcicle. Jeff Rapps has both Midas and Red Devils I can only speculate he keeps them in separate containers. He has collectors that catch his wild caught stock and has built quite a reputation for his quality pure bred fish. It would be bad for his business if he started jerking people around.

I really wanted these Midas because of that fact and it is hard to find pure bred Midas or Red Devils. The fish we usually find in pet stores are crosses. That was a good question though glad you asked it.

He's ugly as sin, next time you are in town you should probably drop him off here. :)

FYI Bill - I'm pretty sure Ivan got that male citrinellus from Don Conkel, not Rapps. The juvies that I got off you were the offspring from a creamsicle male from Conkel, and a red/orange female from Rapps.

Ah Bill and Irene I assume :) he is gorgeous wow! I remember you were selling juvies of pure Midas, were they his offspring? I remember also you (Neil) telling me about those midas from Conkle being imported in to Canada as Midas were hard to come by here in the North.

He is picture perfect! From my research online no disrespect to mister Rapps but Conkles line of Midas are IMO the nicest around :)

Bill's probably forgotten most of this so I'll try and help him out. :) The person that imported all of these various CA cichlids lives in Edmonton, and his name is Ivan. He's also a member here. He has a couple of very large tanks, 700 gallons each I believe and he imported a number of CA cichlids from various well known vendors in the US over the past few years. Some of his amphilophus came from Conkel, some from Rapps. The first group of juvies that Bill & Irene got from Ivan were the offspring from a creamsicle male from Conkel, and a red/orange female from Rapps. This is that pair, and some of those fry.

I still have a male from that pairing.

Later Ivan sold Bill/Irene the male shown by Bill in his initial post, which also came from Conkel.

Here's a pic taken of him a couple of years back.
