Over there
Hey guys, so I decided that I'm gonna use the glass from my 150 to make a bigger tank. I'm going for an 8x2x2. The size of the glass is 6x2 and about 1/2" thick. How do you guys hold the glass in place so that it doesn't fall when it's empty. Do you drill through the glass and screw it to the wood frame or do I put a frame around the glass so that it rests on the wood? This is gonna be my first build and I want it to be perfect. Thanks guys!

Has the wood box portion of the tank been fiberglassed? If so, lay the tank on it's face and install the glass with a liberal amount of silicone sealer (excess can be trimmed away later). Large builds should use a caulking tube of aquarium silicone sealer for a quicker and easier job. Place a non-abrasive cloth over the inside glass pane, once the pane has been sealed in, and apply weight to the edges to force a complete seal. Let cure as recommended and you're good to go.

No I haven't started it yet. I will be drawing out everything next week after finals. Will the silicone be strong enough to hold the glass up? There's gonna be an extra foot of plywood all around the viewing panel to compensate for the extra 2ft of length. I don't really know how to explain it without drawing a picture

On my tank builds, I glued/glassed in a plank at the bottom of the tank to support the pane from sloughing over time. That's it. I never framed in anything else. The silicone supported the glass panel just fine. My plywood 900 gal never leaked around the glass in 17+ years of use.

Sweet! Thanks oddball! I can't wait to get this started!
