Golden dorado tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 22" Dorado was kept in a small(ish) tank by the previous owner with a Hoplias Aimara and much larger P-bass and he had to sell it due to the dorado bullying everything. Thats how aggressive dorados can be.

IS this the same Dorado you acquired at 16"? My question is how big are they when they turn into the nightmarish fish we hear about? How big was the Aimara it was beating up?

Is this sudden aggression maybe something to do with getting sexually mature? Also would it happen if the dorado was raised in a large tank from a small size with hardy large tank mates for life?

Well, He is not as aggressive as he use to be but still very aggressive ever since i've had him in my 1600 gal. He constantly charges my P-bass and Nile perch which are a bit smaller than him (P-bass is 20" and nile is 16") The only fishes in my tank which he doesn't bother is my Bagarius Lica, Wallago Micropogon and Hoplias Curupira. I plan on building a 12,000gal in 2-3 years considering he will eventually outgrow this tank and I'll monitor his aggression in a tank of that size.

How big a tank would you say is necessary for him? I know there active swimmers but they usually get around 2'+ rarely 2.5'

I've had several Dorados in several tanks with many different species of large preds and eventually the Dorado will pick a fish out and pick on it to death. The only success I've seen with other keepers is to have the tank full of other fast swimming fish fish so the Dorado is to overly occupied with so many other moving fish that it can't pick one out. If you keep just a few fish with the Dorado, they will get bored and start picking on them until death. That's been my experience

I had a couple of Dorados. The tail damage was from a large Dat. They were bullying that other fish in the background until I introduced the Dat. Then they stopped the bullying.
