770 Gallon Monster Setup

You grow pothos out of the tank, only submerging the roots in the water.

If your fish trim the roots, just soak the roots in a place they can't get to. As for me, I let them chew the roots, and occasionally they get pulled under water. That is fine too. A pot of pothos is around 5 dollars for me. I usually buy 2 pots every six month to place ones that get destroyed.

I'm not growing my pothos in the tank for similar reasons (still hoping to get a group of Uaru!), mine are growing out of the sump under a 12w energy-saver bulb in a desk lamp and doing just fine. I can't see the air temp being a problem for them, but if your house/tank room gets that cold I'd be looking to invest in some good insulation and a more energy/cost efficient heat source!

The tank is in a small pool room in my yard that isn't connected to my central HVAC system. I insulate the tank pretty well, so it retains heat ok, but the air temps can get chilly during the coldest winter nights.

Gotcha, I was just referring to Alexian suggesting that I attach Anubias and Ferns to the driftwood (which I agree would look cool), but my SDs would make short work out of them. I'm thinking about placing the Pothos in my overflow towers, but I am a little concerned that the roots would grow into my overflow strainers and restrict my drains = flood my display. Maybe I should just keep them in the sump.

Where do you get your Pothos plants?

Excuse me if I missed it, What did you use between the tank and the stand? where did you get it? I am setting up a 550 gallon and I am stumped on what to use..( acrylic tank metal stand)

The guy I bought the tank from actually used Formica (laminate) countertops that you would find at big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes. As long as you seal the exposed areas with a few layers of paint, it should be fine. If the exposed particle board (the underside or the sides) get wet, it really tends to bubble up (expand) which could lead to some problems so you should seal it up to prevent water/humidity damage.

Most people just use 3/4" plywood (if you paint the ends, it wouldn't look bad, but leaving it as exposed bare wood would bother me, but that could just be my OCD). They also sell Marine Grade Plywood that would be nice to have for those occasional spills, but it's a little pricier than standard ply.

Lowes and home depot normally carry pothos.

Thanks KNH.

I tried to send you a PM, but I think the reason I can't is because you don't yet have 5 posts.

I think I speak for everyone on here when I say, please post some pix. We love to see pictures of big setups.

Starting your own build thread would be even better!

Welcome to the forum!

I will start a build thread when I get a little closer to getting it running. I have an OCD amount of pics to put in it! I had to build a room onto our house because I didn't have a door big enough to get it thru......My name is Adam, and I have a problem! haha

Thanks for the tip on the skin but I have already skinned it with wood. I put it together so we could go thru the doors or move the whole piece.
