FIREMOUTH Red intensity (feeding or genetics?)

I agree w/ everything already said. Also there are many different firemouth variations since they are found in many different locations. Some are actually brackish which could affect color.
Also line breeding could produce intense reds.

BTW that firemouth is amazing. I found this article that might help. Also this male FM in the article has the same type of coloring. It may be the variation you are looking for and describes the different variations in shape and color.

Food and water conditions will affect the intensity of color but the amount of red on the body can definitely be a function of the population. The one brought out of Guatamala, T. meeki 'Rio Subin' is one such variant. Here is a female that I have. She's about three years old and 'lookin' good'.
