flowerhorn water change? how often

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe all of the above advice is good. But don't switch to 90%(for example) in one swing. Do gradual increases up to the amount you want over time. He will get used to big tap water change. Like Daniel I'm doing 90% change ATM. But it's only because I'm going to Thailand for a month and want it as clean as possible when I leave in the next few weeks. Normally I just do 25%(practical amount for a busy guy, and keeps nitrate in range), but have been bumping it up by 5gal a week over the last few months. Major time consuming but Frankie looks very happy with the new schedule, and I'll feel more confident about him when I'm gone. when I get back I will start at 5 gal change

okay thanks,
I need a bigger tank.
Maybe ill get a second tank just for my big FH. Hopefully as the fry grow they get along.
My big FH attacks anything i throw on his side. I used to have 3 fry but one of them someone slipped through to the other side :(

90% is WAY too much. FH can get sick very easy. Nitrates should never exceed 20ppm. I do two 30% WC's a week on mine and I keep only one in a tank unless I am breeding.

Your knowledge is a bit incorrect. Many people as myself do 90% a week and its all beneficial to the fish. If you know what you are doing there's no foul play.

70% - 90% over here. As long as you have the bio works great. And I keep more sensitive fish species than just my FH's

The only reason I don't do water changes over 30% at a time is to avoid temperature shocks, of course you can avoid this if you're more diligent with the water temp going in, I can never be bothered though; so its room temperature and only causes minor fluctuations till it settles.

Yes sir you got the right idea. No way I would do a 90% change on a tank full of rays but fh's you can do 100% as long as temp/ph match up.

So let me get this right you use water from a pre existing tank for temp ph and bio but your nitrates are setting at 15 ppm with weekly 90% water changes even with heavy feed your nitrates shouldnt be that high are leaving something out here I'm just wondering

Idk if u can put pleco with flowerhorn last time I tried that and my flowerhorn almost kill the pleco. Well I guess u could say depend in the flowerhorn if it's super aggressive or not. I usually do a 30% water change because like all other cichlids flowerhorn is a big eat and they poop a lot

My pleco is bigger than my fh and he usually leaves him alone. I can't put anything smaller than him or he will kill them.
I occasionally put my Oscar with my fh. But since my Oscar is like an inch bigger. My Oscar dominates my fh
