My Dad gave me their trough that they used to use for their horses. It have 2 cracks so he told me I could have it for free if I repaired the cracks. I have patched the cracks and it's held water for over 2 weeks now. It's not the prettiest patching job I've done but I'm using it as backyard pond so I wasn't too concerned about looks as long as it was durable...it's definitely durable after all the silicone and patches I used

I built a temporary filter for it and it seems to be working pretty well considering it only has a 225gph pump on it. I will be upgrading the pump to a 500 gph and adding 2 225 gph pumps soon and building spray bars, waterfall, and fountain as well.

We'll start landscaping within the next few weeks when my hubby has time off to help with the strenuous labor such as digging and building paver walls.

Right now I have a Red Eared Slider living in it until my Mom finishes it's home at her house. I am unsure what I want to keep in it since we live in Texas and our summers usually consist of 100+ weather

Here's what it looks like right now

gotta love a girl whos into the hobby ;)

Dang straight! Lol. The DIY has become some what of an obsession :banghead: my hubby gets a little irritated at times I think so I just do my tinkering at night when he's at work and babies are sleeping.

I'm sad to say, we are going to wait until next season to do the pond. Right now it'll just be my redneck chill tub LMBO.

I'm hoping a lot of people decide that the "pond" thing isn't for them and sell their pumps/filter/accessories for super cheap on CL this fall ;)

Something came up and we won't have the financial means to complete it :( we had to pull $ from our hobby fund.

It saddens me but when you have a 5 month old, 3 year old, 6 year old things happen more times than not.

Oh well, it'll for sure happen next spring :) I'm looking at it in a "glass half FULL" way. I have a little less than a WHOLE year to plan and possibly collect more stuff for a bigger better pond lol

I would be more concerned about your winters then the summer. I would go the native route.

January is our worst part of winter. Temps get down to upper 20's at worse case. We already have a de-icer for it. Not great at keeping temps up but it does keep ice from forming on top
