I'm looking for stocking help for my 55g (4') .. I currently have a 2" FM and a 1" convict... Trying to figure out what would work with them .. Wether it's more cichlids or a school etc.. Hmmm
Some pictus pims could work for active catfish, I'd be careful on adding more cichlids cause if any one pairs up they can make life miserable for everyone else a acara could work or rainbow cichlids
Single jewel maybe, blood parrot should work. IMO jack Dempsey need at least a 75 before you try mixing them with anything so I'd say no to a jd. A single female may fit but mine was evil in a 55

I've had no problems with pair of female cons, one GT ~5", and one JD ~ 7 1/2" all in a 55 started in a 40 for 1 year. Cons are very hearty and are not easily pushed around. I would just make sure that if you get a Jack make sure it is bigger then your con.
I have one pair of mating cons that push around a 12" oscar its very amusing to watch when the oscar eats meals bigger then the cons but still backs off when they dart out from a cave.
A school of dither fish might be your best option.
Since your cichlids have probably already set up territories (if you've had them for any length of time together), any new cichlid may be at a distinct disadvantage, and mauled or killed. And the 3 you have will eventually grow large enough to take up much of the floor space in that size tank.
New world tetras or livebearers large enough not to be eaten would do well, because in nature cichlids watch these schools to judge their own security, and keeps them from spending much of their time hidden.
If you're not concerned about being geographically correct, barbs or rainbows also fit that same purpose.
