Feeding Armatus feeders for life?

Interesting,so do you breed your tilapia? If so I'd like to see your set up.

Yes. At the moment I have a 55 gallon with 5 females and 1 male with a bio wheel and an air stone. And another 40 gallon breeder to grow them out. And they are growing pretty fast. But I plan on having a kiddie pool outside the house to get them to breed more / faster. They are all around 5-6" and they started breeding the first day.

How can you grow enough to use as food? You would need like 1000 tilapias.

Yes I would if I own an armie, GATF and other awesome big ones. And my ultimate goal is to be able to grow 1000 of them :) (in an 8' diameter kiddie pool). And also, I don't have armies ATM, I have scombies (about 6-8") and they don't get as big as an armatus.

http://www.tilapiafarmingathome.com/Pages/default.aspx has a lot of information regarding breeding them and it was my source when I started.

The cost is too much!!!!

If my Armatus and GATF become monsters, I will start buying adult tilapia from fish farm! It's only $1.5 per pound! Way cheaper than growing them up!

Each fish is around (2-3 pounds)

Can't go wrong with commerical food grade fish! :D

I've thought about the same thing to grow tiliapia. I nixed the idea after I figured out how many I'd need to sustain them. I have 3 Armies, One GATF and one VATG. All over 13 inches.

Actually it really doesn't cost much.
- Get 6 (5 female and 1 male) live ones form the market. (1.5$ / pound equates to about 12 bucks
- Get them to breed (easier than guppies)
- It takes 8 months for the fry to reach 1 pound
So depending on the size of your aquarium fish, you can decide what size to feed them.
- 2 months: 1/4 pounds
- 4 months: 1/2 pounds
- 6 months: 3/4 pounds
- 8 months: 1 pound.

But 8 months is a long time and a LOT of patience is required :).

So during these 8 months as they're growing out what do yo feed them? And you'd need to have a constant supply of fry at all different sizes to fill the pipeline as the bigger ones are fed. It's a great thought but when you think about the execution it's not that practical. Every day you'd have to go catch them, fish them out to feed. It's just too much hassle. I just go to my freezer defrost some shad or whatever is available and throw them in.

Yes I do agree that it is too much of a hassle and that is why I said "8 months is a long time and a LOT of patience :)." But my personal opinion (just my opinion) is that I need my fish to be as "wild" and as self sustainable as possible. Another way to explain this is: I grow my own veggies and fruits so that I don't have to goto the supermarket to get them :).
