OTF Gold Crossback Sudden Death

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry for your loss, although it looks like it got overfed at an early age/size and its digestive system could've gotten screwed up. When my aro was around 6-9in, I fed it frogs as treat and fed a maximum of 2 frogs for the day (and a day of no feeding after that for complete digestion). 6-7 frogs a day could've been overkill and could've caused the problem. These beasts can eat like there's no end so control is key. Also with fish, imo, it's better to be underfed than to be overfed,

Hmm they are small frogs though. But yea.. I was eager to pump it up fat and fast

Sorry bro, I would totally blame you for it's death. More food is always dangerous.
Apart from the bioload and infections.
I also, makes the fish more prone to diseases, due to less immunity.

Noted bro.

I was once told that you can feed a fish as much as it could eat in a minute. Not that I am using that as a gauge but this advice somehow stays in my mind.

Back to the choking topic - any bros has solution to what I can do when an arowana chokes?

Surprised he got sick of pellets once he started eating them.what kind of pellet?...Any feeder should be gutloaded otherwise it's missing needed nutrients..Petstores usually don't feed feeders hardly anything to cut down on the bioload cleanup & cost..frogs might be tough to gutload givin that your gonna need to supply them with insects etc close to aro feedings which would be a pain I would imagine (unless the frogs are coming from the wild)..Not saying this is the cause, he may of choked like your saying, just throwing it out there...Also, 10 to 15% WC's every 2weeks I don't believe will cut it for very long unless you have him in crazy water volume

That's what I was thinking when I first read the post. The frogs skin peeling in that short time meant high ammonia or nitrates. Plus look at his feeding schedule. Lots of waste with 10-15% every two weeks. Should be more like 10-15 every 2 days with that aggressive feeding.

IMO it didn't choke. Seemed like a slow decline of health for the fish.

Gl next time! Don't give up!

Thanks.

Or perhaps the frog skin peel is caused by the stomach juice (?) the arowana is force expelling because of the choke? that stomach juice should be acidic right?
Because it is a very sudden death, I doubt it is the water para as I'm careful to always scoop food waste and poop out asap. No tankmates

It's OTF inhouse pellet I believe. Fed the fish that for 2 weeks when just buy it. Then I introduced feeder fish as treat and it got hooked on it.

So.. feeders from LFS usually ain't nutritious out of the bag yea? Looks like its safer to stick strictly with pellets next time.

my 10-15% WC is not a hard rule. sometimes i do up to 20% if needed
