New HOB fails to please yet again

They don't make bad products, just cheap ones. They aim to provide cheap products to stores to compete with brands such as Cascade. IMO their filters aren't of the same caliber as Aquaclears or Marinelands, but they are also much cheaper. I think they blow Cascade out of the water.

Aqueon and Coralife are both brands produced by Central Pet & Garden. So buying Aqueon products is roughly like buying Wal-Mart products - some things are comparable to the better brands, but some are noticeably inferior. You will usually see Aqueon and Coralife products in use in basic, low-tech systems. I use a Coralife super skimmer and I'm very happy with it...but their HO-T5 bulbs are nowhere near as good as a an ATI or a Wave Point.

In summation, they offer low-to-mid range prices for their products. They are trying to produce things for the average fishkeeper on a budget and they do a good job of it. But sometimes you get what you pay for...

Yeah and then made a thread complaining about it. So, he cost that company 4 filters worth a money for no reason.

He technically never said they were from this setup....You've never had a filter break on you? Ever? Also, who said he returned any of them? And returns don't just end up in the trash, they go back to the manufacturer.

I have had similar experience with Aqua-Tech filters and I never ran them with sand.

I think it is wrong to create a thread bashing a product when it's your fault. I run sand in all my tanks and know and accept the risk. It would be nice if the OP changed the title of the thread.

I have had similiar experiences with aqueon. To me their filters are way over rated as far as their sizes and filtration capacity go. I have a quiet flow 30 on my 20 long and it hardly does the job... It trickles water out of the spillway even when all media is clean and the filter is less than 6 months old! And I don't even have sand on that tank! I've used their filters on a few occasions and they have always been like this they have never been good they have always been either horrible or so so, never really doing the job right. that's why I will never use aqueon filters again. If I want a HOB I use aqua clear which is technically now fluval. But I learned my lesion and the motor is already loud as well. I'm going to remove the filter pretty soon and replace with a nice aquaclear. Which actually will do what I need it to do. I mean I'm only stating my opinion I know people will disagree with me but that's with any opinion.

Ive always loved their HOB filters. They arent particularly exceptional but they are cheap, dependable and move alot of water. They run $11-$30 at my lfs depending on size. I have a quietflow55/75 thats been on a tank with playsand for 3 years without any issue. Its a little loud now but nothing compared to my ac110. It may just be showing its age, sand or no sand.

I have another quietflow55/75 on an oscar tank w/ a sponge prefilter for mech filtration and 2 large filter bags of biomax in the filter instead of cartridges.

My only complaint is the media is expensive. Thats why I cut my own bonded filter pads. Good for mech filtration to be used in conjunction with a canister.

Love the fact that you never have to prime these filters. The motor being underwater helps with noise too.

Is that play sand in your tank?
Play sand is too light (weight) to be used as aquarium substrate, it will ruin any filter pump, expensive or not, over time.
If you are going to use sand, use pool filter sand, and rinse well before putting it in the tank, and let settle before turning on any filters or pumps.

Its been in there since 2011. Trust me, I paid my dues with it. My Africans loved to dig. Over time all the fine particles get removed by waterchanges and unfortunate equipment. It ruined an Ac110. It seems alot of the finer substrate is gone and the heavier partivles remain. I would never do play sand again. I didnt know any better at the time but its fine now

Turns out, not quite. The bag was sold pretty much with everything else, it was really in-your-face. I figured tere couldn't be any harm in it and I was right. Turns out the sand first got into the filter when it wasn't "broken up" and processed enough yet. Whenever I even grazed the sand, it would over dramatically fly up everywhere. After letting it sit for a day, the sand is now heavier and comes right back to the bottom even when I forcefully swap at the sand.
