Wow nice setup. I really like the placement of the driftwood. Your wisteria looks great. How many Watts was your lighting. Mine send to stay small none have reached that size yet. I believe i may have planted them the wrong way and have them growing sideways now. Saw i think yourd be ok with 24 inches. 30 is ideal however i believe the 24 would suffice.

Thank you. It was tough to find driftwood that would spread the length of the tank. Its not about how many watts but the par value. These were 4x40watt t8's. So 160 watts over 200gallons. This not only gave the wisteria good height but managed to carpet as well. I went for 6700k bulbs as well as that's what gave me the most success.

Lep good to know. Yeah i am going to be on the hunt for some driftwood myself. Ill have to look into that. There is a store close to me that resells some great equipment for fairly cheap. Just have to talk the guy down first. In a previous post you stated that you believe he would have to get rid of them prior to actually needing wider. Just wondering why that is.

Most people end up having to move houses, bored of what they have, want something different, have to go off to school or just want out of the hobby. Its very unlikely that someone will end up keeping the same gars for their entire life, its just how it is. So my point was by the time it outgrows the width of that tank, you will more then likely have moved on to a different fish

would personally go for at least 2.5ft wide for Florida gars, but 2' will be fine for a good long time

Alright, thanks guys, i guess ill skip the gars then, id hate to not be able to give them suitable fish tank dimensions because i will not be upgrading again. Thanks for all your guys help!

Alright i know i said i woulnt get any, but man when i saw these 4 beuts i had to get them. They are eating well on blood worms, i dont plan on ever feeding them live though, do you guys think this will be an issue?








This ones name is arnold, hes my favorite because he has a messed up jaw, idk why but fish that are deformed are my favorite, not because they are messed up just because i like taking care of fish some people would find not satisfactory. Same one in pic #1 lol

Are these Florida? My lfs had some that looked like these in san diego, less than 5inches long, thin though.

When gars are young they should be offered live food at all times so they can eat when they feel they need to. When they are young there bodies are in a state of rapid growth and they need food readily available. After they reach about a foot and a half there bodies go from rapid growth mode to sexual maturity. Growth rate will dramatically slow and appetite will become less. That's when it's time to pellet train. I raised 2 from under 6in to now there around 18-20in. If you Google gar care, this growth and care method is what is suggested for raising them from small. When mine were young, I bred platies for them. Not sure if I spelled that right. Than I went to minnows and than I worked on pellet training.
