Would like to start a SA/CA Cichlid set up!!!!! Help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you can find a Lyonsi I recommend them highly. I just got one recently and it's becoming my favorite fish. It was drab when I bought it but it's color is starting to show and it looks awesome. Also it's always swimming and coming to the front looking for me to feed it. It's tough, but not mean so it can fit with a variety of fish. Good luck.

They look nice, but i'll probably go with a blue JD for the time being. Its easier to get in my area(expensive though almost 30$ for 1) and I love the way they look. GORGEOUS! Thanks for the input though.

You can try Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. Try getting some good strains or from a reputed vendor.
You will love them , very personable , mild , slow growers with awesome coloration.
Only flip side is they need good care and attention.

I think i'll go with your suggestion. I've heard stories of JD's biting people. Is their aggression level comparable with normal JD's? One of my coworkers keeps telling about how mean his JD was when he had it. I have 2 JD's I'm concerned that they'll attack the BJD when it introduced to the tank.

I personally wouldn't add an EBJD into your current tank, there will be a death. Probably the EBJD. When you get the new tank, add them all at the same time. I added a 9" EBJD to my 55 and the 5" JD almost killed it overnight. It was moved immediately after and thankfully lived.

EBJDs are much more mild mannered than their normal colored siblings. They also grow MUCH slower. So if you are going to add an EBJD, make sure its at least 2-3" larger than the normal JDs. Also make sure there are plenty of sight breaks in the tank to help alleviate any potential aggressive behavior.

Do you know if a red severum would be a good tank mate for a jack dempsey?

I currently have a Red Severum with a Dempsey and I have had zero issues. My Severum is about 9" and the Dempsey is about the same. All fish are different though, depends on their own temperment.

I was thinking of getting either a Red Severum or a Threadfin Geo. You know what the behavior toward a Geo would be? I'm leaning toward the Red Sev though. Now the issue is getting one in my area. hahaha

No idea about the geo. Red Severum is a beautiful fish that is peaceful but also won't take any crap. You wouldn't be disappointed!

Heckelii threadfins are more acara-like than geo-like. Both heckelii and sevs reach 10-12" and are peaceful. Conspecifics are higher with the heckelii, but not terrible. A normal JD will likely run the tank regardless of which species you choose. Combine that with the similar temperament between both species and you end up with a situation where you can just choose whichever one you like best.
