Maby if you were to introduce them to an environment that was condusive to breeding once they reached reproductive size, it might just work?

I suppose, maybe the stress on the environment they faced would affect their genes but bichir breeding isnt really as easy as putting to adults in a tank together.

It was basically a mesh that sat just on the surface of the water. It was filtered from underneath. It was also heavily misted and really warm to keep the humidity up
Epigenetics exist. Can happen rapidly outside of that, depending on the pressure and plasticity of the traits.
