Veggies for FH's

He gets one serving of a fruit or vegetable every day. For my gel food, the recipe varies but it's usually a mix of shrimp, scallops, salmon, cod, tilapia...whatever fish is on sale at the market, spinach, peas, bananas, vitachem and naturose astaxanthin. I don't use all those ingredients at the same time as I make enough food for the week and alternate so he doesn't get the same thing every week. Throw everything in a blender, add some gelatin and freeze. It does get a little messy but hey, if it's good for him, I don't mind keeping up with the tank maintenance! ;)

That's hardcore souzie! love it..I've never been a pellet only guy for any of my fish. I certainly don't want to start with a fish that averages a fairly short lifespan. They've gotten 90% pellets so far. Really would like to make it more of a 50/50 for my FH's. Thanks for the info

Anytime!

Oh, I forgot to mention I add crushed up pellets to the gel food as well. Seriously though, I started feeding veggies because when I first got my FH all he would eat was bloodworms. He ended up with major bloat and a prolapsed anus. I cured with epsom salt and threw every vegetable imaginable into the tank. From that day on, I was determined to feed him the most nutritious diet to keep him as healthy as possible.

Yeah, I noticed the bloat thing after a combo of high protein pellets and a gd amount of superworms. Not sure if they digest the superworms very well either. I might be wrong about that..That's why i'm thinking about some veggies now too.lol

Yes Veggies are a good idea. When Flowerhorn are young (the first 12-18 months) they are ok on higher protein diets that don't include much vegetable content. However as soon as they start to become larger you really want to include as much vegetable food as they will accept as it is good for there stomachs and intestines. Yes if you get a fish as a juvenile it is better to start incorporating the veggie content sooner so they are more accepting as adults. This info comes from respected Thai Breeders as well as US based breeders. It all stems back to their heritage involving Vieja synspilum and other species that all were omnivores.
