Hey everybody,

I was just curious on if anyone has kept pumpkinseeds with other species and not had a fin nipping problem. I've heard they can be a little bitey. I just netted a 1.5" pseed last night and hes in QT for the moment, Im just trying to figure out which tank hes going in. Its between a bullhead and pickerel tank, and I'm guessing the overwhelming majority of you will say the bullhead, but I just thought I'd get some opinions.
Thanks!

P.S. hes not staying in either, he will be in his own native tank eventually, but these are the next grow outs for him, unless he can stay in the bullhead tank, then he may just be a permanent resident there.

I'd put it with the bullhead. What size tank is that since if it's at least 75 you could keep a bullhead and Pseed in it for life, bullhead might outgrow it though.

One time I took a 6 inch bluegill out of my tank with my 12"+ bullhead because the other bluegill beat him up and put him in with Earl (my 7-8") bullhead. He recovered from his bluegill attack and Earl left him alone. I came home one day and the bluegill was dead with its eyes eaten out by Earl. Not very relavent but I thought I'd share that.

Also I have a tank with a few small pumpkinseed and they chase each other around occasionally but I don't notice and shredded or picked at fins.

thats reeeeeeally relevant haha I'd prefer no fin loss/death on either the pumpkinseed or marty mcwhiskers (my bullhead) thanks for the heads up!

its a 55 growout for Marty the bullhead, so the Pseed would either get moved with him or just stay in the 55 though im worried about the size for him too. I'll grow him up a little more, throw him in with Marty and see if there is any problematic behavior.
Thanks!!

I've never had a problem. I keep them in my pond outside with my koi, tilapia and channel cats and I have a few indoors with my white perch, yellow perch, bullheads and sunfish...however, I noticed that a few of them are missing and I believe that is due to my big flatheads and some big channel cats in there. I use them as bait though but I don't see them bothering the other fish. They swim around with the perch in a little school.

Awesome! once he isn't swallowable size anymore, he'll head in the bullhead tank haha
