What are some good tank mate options in a 125 for a single Oscar. Looking for medium sized fish, I was thinking a severum or two or if that'd be to tight maybe acara or something of that nature.

Geophagus are nice how about some of those.

All work well. I have seen setups with various acaras from peaceful C. maronii to more aggressive A. rivulatus. Severums are also a staple on the list of oscar tankmates. I would say anything that reaches 5-6" at minimum and isn't hyper aggressive should be fine with an oscar.

I was recently told Oscar are shoalers and do best in groups. I'm not sure how accurate that information is since I only ever had an oscar once and not for very long.

I've seen it happen in videos of large setups but in my 125 I would only do maybe 3 and only cause my father has done it in the past without to much chaos. And if anything I only want 1 Oscar for this setup this time around

I get a lot of 50/50 responses to if oscars do well singularly or in groups. Obviously a solo oscar can be done, but I must agree with the other side of the coin. After seeing videos of groups of oscars, they are much more entertaining to watch in groups than solo due to their interactions with one another. It makes me feel that groups are a better way to keep them than solo. Whether they shoal in the wild or not is beyond my understanding, but in the home aquaria, they definitely seem to. And it's not surprising to me at all seeing how many different species of SA cichlids do best in groups. Lone festivum, Geos, Angels and discus are a few examples out of many that show they can be kept singly, but thrive and show more interesting behavior when kept in groups of 4+.

4 oscars in a 125 though lol. Think of the poop.

I think a severum would work too. Or a convict. Or a blood parrot. I've seen these combos work.

Oscars doing well with other fish is different from schoaling. Oscars also need space and territories. Individual personality also come into play

Oscars can go with any other fish basically besides large male dovii. As long as the oscar is a good 1-2 Inches larger at purchase he should be ok I have had them with devils, flowerhorns, grammodes, and they do very well if they are larger and they can take a beating to
