Poor fish..

I've only just found out that he had this fish, he said it had been in his brothers room but it had been moved to his living room so I saw it when I went over on Friday. He had been given the tank with the fish in it so I can understand why he kept it in the tank, he had obviously been told by the person that gave it to him that it had been in the tank its whole life and was fine, I just don't understand why he would keep it in the tank after I've offered to give it a home that it can swim around in. I've even offered to trade him some fish that will be happy in that tank for life! And I disagree with saying that its no different from what everyone else is doing, a fish kept in the correct temperature, with regular water changes, enough swimming space to exercise and turn comfortably and a working biological filter is going to live a much better life than what this fish is, nobody can give them the swimming space they have in the wild so there's no point arguing about that..

Considering where fish live normally maybe not but that's no defense of the way that this fish has been kept.

Sorry, I was not going to post in this thread, but since someone (ashdavid) might as well have plucked this very thought from my mind I cannot even begin to explain how strongly I 100% agree with this poster.

Don't look at these types of pictures if it bothers you. My bottom line, (And I can GUARANTEE YOU) is taht anytime that you are pointing the finger at others, take a very close look at it, and you will notice three of your own fingers pointing right back at you.

Let ye who are perfect fishkeepers throw the first stone. . . . . .

I will just through a freaking hard core fact out there. Take a wild guess how many foot radius a shiner minnow in the wild will travel each and every day?

If anyone is keeping a pair of Golden shiner minnows in less than a 10,000 gallon tank? If so they are doing these minnows a grave injustice!

Keep fish, and let keep fish for Pete's sake!

PS: I am uber guilty of under size homing my two Golden shiners in a 40 gallon tank. They are however so dumb, that just because a businessman called the tank design on this 40 gallon a "breeder" the golden shiners fell for it hook, line and sinker. They just won't stop breeding in that tiny tank.

Sorry for the rant kr, I was not directing this at you.

Again I stress that I gave it my all NOT to post in this thread, but I am far too infuriated by this mass-mentality that is spewed regularly here on MFK!

I so wish that this topic was NEVER allowed to be posted in the general discussion forum.

In fact since MFK does not provide an adult only forum without the limitation of "family level posting" it should not be covered in any forum on MFK IMO.

I haven't had time to read the entire thread, how old is this guy with the fish?

Surely their is an elder figure in his life that can tell him what it takes to be a man, that life isn't easy and you gotta bite the bullet sometimes.

Screaminleaman I didn't want to take up more space by quoting your post,I read it and you are entitled to your opinion just like Ash David and the rest of us are so feel free to post away.I think all of us here should be abundantly aware of the vastness of the natural bodies of water of the world and how no aquarium can ever hope to compare with them but that really has nothing to do with the thread topic. We as fish hobbyists and collectors of different types of animals have an obligation to provide our pets with the best possible conditions and care and that is far from what is and has been going on here in the example in this thread.

Well said K

Thanks X.I just don't see why I should have a ten thousand gallon pond in order for me to be able to say that a fish should at least be able to move around in it's glass box.

+1, +2 and +3.

As soon as we put a fish in an aquarium, no where close can we provide what they have in their natural habitat.

Again, kr, I am sorry, and I do (seriously respect you as a poster) value reading most of the posts of yours here on MFK. I do get the gist of the argument, however; there are as many reasons why any of us as fish keepers can blame on setups less than reasonably ideal for any species of fish.

The majority involve either intentional of inadvertent data supplied by the seller to the buyer!!!!!!!

I cannot agree more with the idea of research prior to buying any species of fish. With that said, I strongly feel it is 10x as bad to require any personal fish keeper to gain a college level degree in order to keep fish. This or any other "certificate" proving a working understanding of the potential pet fishes biological requirements. Again with this strictly my opinion, but I think it is clear how the requirement for education could, and would be according to human nature, used as an argument to keep all but the top handful percent of the highest level Ichthyologists from being able to cast stones.

Being a gar fanatic, I cannot tell you how many times that I have purchased mail order gar that were NOT the species listed. I LOL, thoroughly have come to expect this from vendors, and feed the needle fish, chariacans or improperly ID's Lep. genus gars!!!

Again, I am sorry, but since NO VENDORS selling gar can ID the things 1/100th as well as Solomon, Pel, or Xander I strongly apply this to other species.

So, if you buy a RBP from a vendor and get a Pacu instead, the buyer is the "bad person"? Baloney, I again cannot disagree more.

The vendor is the "bad person" and the "poor" Pacu gets filleted and used for feed to carnivorous fish.

Just my take. Vendors need to be held responsible.

It sounds like the only difference between the OP and myself, is when I get FORCED into this situation, I cull the fish usually as feed, and blacklist the vendor for future business.

Please do not ask, I will NOT share my banned vendor list as I think that there are MANY issues wrong with asking others to share in my "bad" experience with a vendor as an overall cut and dry responsible warning to other MFK members.
