My German Shepherd has chronic diarrhea. -Vet no help

My dog recently had this problem. We gave her half a pepcide for acid reflux and a cup of chicken and rice twice a day for a week. The chicken needs to be boiled so all the grease is out. Use plain white rice. This mixture settles dogs stomachs supposedly. The vet said it's a very common problem and this solution worked perfectly

Update. --

The dog is having solid movements, I switched him off of blue buffalo to nutro natural choice. Right now he is eating a 50/50 mix until most of the BB is gone. Hes been gradually getting better. I also stepped down on using fiber powder and I am not using it anymore.

I was hesitant to switch food unless it was another underlying issue and the food switch made it worse but im glad I did. And im glad I'm ignoring my vet's advise lol.

Hes 6 months old and 51lbs

Blue Buffalo is a great dog food. My wife even use to work for them. However, Taste of the Wild was the better food for our dogs. Both are quality foods. Anyway, my suggestion to you would be to put a scoop of plain yogurt or pumpkin puree in with his food. Any time out dogs have bowel problems, one of these two seem to fix it right up. The yogurt is a great source of probiotics and the pumpkin is good for fiber. Good luck.
 
So i have a GSD and she had similar issues . i think she may have have a pancreas issue cause she eats bunches and poops bunches but no weight gain and she is thin. her weight is stead and finally got rid of her stool issues. So i would suggest a few things.

1 is get any chicken out of his diet. Chicken is one of the top allergies of dogs so this could be a factor.
2 make sure that the food is grain free for the same reasons above.
3 look for food that has a high protein % because dogs are carnivores.
4 you will need to do the changes gradually then wait around 1-2 months with the new diet to allow his digestive system to show you if the changes are good.
5 if you think it could be pancreas issue your money can be better spent not doing the test and finding some raw beef pancreas that you can feed you dog over a period of a month. not sure on you dogs weight but by looks i would say around 1/8-1/4 cup per day added to his food wait a month and see if there are changes, i have read some where that frozen pancreas only last about 2 months i think for pancreas issues, the needed enzymes start to break down or somehting. The b12 test doesn't mean there is a pancreas issue the lack of b12 is a symptom of the issue but could also be caused by other things. the test can run up to a $500 i think and even then it is not conclusive.

for my dog i have found that by mixing two different brands she is doing really well. i mix 1 bag holistic and 1 bag avoderm. Just make sure that as you change things do it one at a time otherwise it will be hard know what the fix is when it happens.

This is literally the worst advice you could give.

1 st to the person I am quoting, dog doesn't have pancreatitis. It would be dead. Period. It is a acute life threatening illness.
2nd the number one cause of pancreatitis is foods like blue buffalo that are too high in protein and fat. Not only is it unnecessary it is actually dangerous unless your dog is an athlete.
3 holistic means virtually nothing for dog food labeling.
4 there is No benefit to being grain free


Dogs are not obligate carnivores and absolutely do not need a high protein content. Additionally they can get all their repotting from plants, unlike cats.

Please do ANY research on the topic before spewing this. And I don't mean going on some foods website there are plenty of books that pull on research for their information...

1st holistic is a brand of dog food that i am using like blue buffalo is a brand.
2nd sure wolves eat berries and grass but any biologist, zoologist, and deer/elk/moose will say that wolves are carnivores, the majority of their diet is meat. dogs are basically wolves, especially give the fact that dogs are a sub set of the grey wolf, canis lupus, it is not what a dog will eat that makes it something its that a dogs digestive track and teeth are for meat meat and meat. that makes them a carnivore
i could say more but i have no need. i know what i have said is correct.
The OP is more than welcome to take my advice or not.
 
If the dog isn't an athlete, too much protein is bad for it. Period.

Glad your dog is doing well. My rottie had a ton of stomach issues when she was younger. It took us forever to find a food that didn't make her sick. As she has gotten older her stomach has become harder. Which we are very happy with lol.

Feeding food that has a high % protein and feed too much protein are too different things. if it is a high protein food feed smaller portions if the dog is not active. All i am saying is that a meat based diets is what dogs need. Ruminants are animals that have digestive tracks for plants.fact- dogs are not ruminants. I am not saying that plant material is bad for dogs i am saying that grain based diets are not good and meat based diets are. How meuch the dog its is dependent on the owner. Dogs digest pretty much like humans do. Fast energy and if not used up turned into fast fat. protein take longer to digest give a slower release of energy than carbs. i am not going to go into all the detail. let me try and find something that could be seen as credible so if you want to read up on it you can.

ok so here is a quote i found in this article and yall can go read it if you want but doesn't bother me if you don't.
According to Canine and Feline Nutrition, page 174:

"In general, high-quality animal source proteins provide superior amino acid balances for companion animals, compared with the amino acid balances that are supplied by grain proteins. The protein in grains is not as balanced or available as the protein in high-quality animal sources…"
