what is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have raised quite a few myersi from a small size and his does look like a stressed myersi. When small, they are a bit of an "ugly duckling", but when they mature, they are absolutely gorgeous. Here's what you have to look forward to.

Wow thanks guys! Im kinda glad they screwed up on the labeling lol. Right now hes in a 18" cube tank (about 30g). Will a 90g be enough later on?

And is hikari cichlid gold good for it?

He could live out his life in a 90G as a solitary fish. Myersi do not get along with their own kind at all (at least in my experience) and are easily stressed if with a more aggressive species. Unless you have a much larger tank, best to keep him by himself as a 'show fish'. By the way, check these three pics from the internet out. Do they look like yours? Pattern is similar but different too. I guess there's a chance you don't have a myersi but a juvenile rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris) or shadow bass (Ambloplites ariommus). Check the tail. A myersi has a convex tail ), and the Ambloplites have a notched (two lobe) < tail. Then again, the myersi tail is clear, the Ambloplites tails are barred, and your specimen looks clear.

It`s just not close enough to say but it`s patterned like a rock bass, and it seems to have red eyes too. Lets hope for the myersi!
Belly up, I took note of your rock bass comment. Hope not but ... time will tell.

When I saw the first pics, I thought it was a juvy Nandus sp. but the second set shows too many hard anal spines (I think).

I don't think it's a juvy Rock Bass (though natives aren't my speciality), we have them here and their eyes are huge at that tiny size ... way out of proportion which I don't see in the pics.

Just a guess though.

I'll take more close full body pictures today to try n help the research team lol
