How Stupid are American college students?

The child abuse remark was rather dumb but the comment about voting is interesting.I do think our youth need to be more educated in politics and government.A guy on a talk radio show I listened to the other day brought up an interesting idea that people should be required to take and pass some type of basic civics test in order to be able to vote.
 
Allowed?...they have to take entry exams and pay exorbitant amounts of money in order to get in.
 
Yes, and then you have people that know way more yet don't get into college because they don't have the money..

That would be to dangerously close to the "literacy" exams they used to stop minorities from voting. We all have the right to vote based on our constitution, exams would make it a privilege instead of a right.

You mean don't go to college, admissions don't decide based on money- and that's why we have student loans and financial aid and scholarships. There's a rarely a person that pays for college straight out of pocket.

And did you know a number of colleges require American government and Politics classes to graduate- a lot of people become more politically aware WHILE in college. You'd have a lot more oblivious people in turning people away based on knowing who the Vice President was- maybe that civil war thing was weird- but they have got caught off guard as well.

surveys and statistics can all be scewed(sp) by the person or group taking them, lets take the Seattle transportation director as a case in point. He states that 2/3 of the folks in Seattle do not drive every day to work. this is a true statement if you are just counting the folks that live in down town Seattle, this his argument for more bike lanes in Seattle. if you put that to all total that work in Seattle and drive to to Seattle each day for work, the number is far different.

I understand and agree we need more involvement. I think another problem is that no one votes. Presidential years we're lucky to have 50-60%

This year we'll be lucky to have 30% in a non presidential year.

Many South American countries have compulsory voting. I'm not necessarily a supporter but gets higher turnout.

Realizing this is turning political..
