Have just recently picked up a baby Jag cichlid, about 1.5 inch. Is in a 100g (400 odd litre) tank; and the only other tank mate is a 7 inch leopard sailfin pleco..

Was interesting in what other fish would be ideal tank mates, obviously being able to cope with the Jag's future aggression, so sort of for a long term home for it.

Thanks :)

Eh nothing really, adult managuense claim tanks like that once they hit adulthood especially if male. You can try convicts but I wouldn't put anything you care about with it.

I had the same combo of male Jag and foot long Gibby plec in a 6ft tank. Jag never liked the plec, and eventually when Jag was big enough, his kill switch went off and he decided plec was done. If I hadnt been right there at the time of attack, there would have been plec parts all over. Jag is a fierce fighter, very fast. If they want something out of their space, they will stop at nothing to make it happen. In your case, on the flip side so to speak, I would beware the much larger plec. A Sailfin is an aggressive pleco, and with your current size dif, your plec can easily kill a baby cichlid, even a Manageunse.

If you are going to add other fish, dithers such a SDs, or especially if you are thinking about any other cichlids, now is the time.
As time goes on, the managuense will take the entire tank as its territory, and kill anything else you add.
If you add others now (or very soon) there is a "chance" it will accept others as a normal part of the tank (maybe a chance, slight though it may be).

A very small chance. SD's are about your best bet, but nothing is safe from a fish that is designed to eat other fish.

Agree with the others. If you're going to try it, do it now. Not guaranteed, but if they are with a tankmate from juvenile age the chances are better of the fish "tolerating" others as it grows.

I raised a firemouth from 1" to 4" over a year or so with black skirt tetras, off of similar advice given in this thread, and he literally ignored them. Numerous times I'd see him just bump right into one swimming by because he didn't notice. Of course, firemouths aren't anywhere near as aggressive or large as a jaguar, but you get the idea.

Side note, he did go crazy when similar or larger sized fish were attempted to be placed with him though. If a fish is similar or larger they feel threatened. I've seen 12" flowerhorns and devils with 2-5" convicts and even tetras. They don't see the others as threats, so no need to be aggressive over territory.

sorry a bit late, i started with 10 cichlids(2-3") in a 4ft tank with ever month got rid of one until i was left with only my jag and vieja zontus in a 700L tank and all was great then a made a big mistake the jag was 21cm and the vieja 18cm, i added a oscar of 18cm and for the next week all hell broke lose.
my vieja went on to killing my jag and almost the oscar to..
all the best on your jag man
