What types of rock do I avoid when searching for rocks at my local river or lake? Some advice would be great.

Avoid sharp rocks and rocks with rounded bottoms also make sure you clean each and every rock well even boil it if you want for that added security.

I always scrubbed and washed mine.

Most rocks are ok. Avoid loose or crumbly sedimentary rocks. They can deteriorate and change ph

Sparkly rocks like pyrite aren't good.

Rust or iron oxide is fairly harmless, however any iron in the rock that has the potential to go through the oxidation process while in the tank is bad.

Test any sparkly rocks with vinegar. If it fizzles it'll raise your ph.
