Silver Dollars.. any better options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had seven big red hook sd's in my 210g and they just were more problems than they were worth. After getting rid of them my tank is so calm. You really dont need target fish like sd's if you have enough cichlids to spread out the aggression as mentioned. I only have four cichlids but they are a bit more on the peaceful side but they still figured out their pecking order.

Skurj....I seen that you sold off most of your RTM...how did your female turnout?

Hey! She is still goin, the rest were all males so I moved them on to Mike at Finatics, I don't want any breeding in her tank! I guess I am a light feeder as she is not even 6" yet.

The SD's were removed this week, added another Thor. Maculipinnis a mature one he's close to 5" and found a beauty 3" texas. Not sure I will add anything else. Without the SD's and the Polleni the mid/top water is pretty empty, thought about maybe grabbing half a dozen Molly's as big as I can get..

I have a peaceful Geo aquarium and obviously I don't NEED a target per se, but I do need some form of top tank movement. I find Harlequins are great but will eventually be eaten by my altifrons at some point.

Right now the best fish I have had are Mollys. I have some real big females and two smaller males. they spend all day grazing and at feeding time they don't tend to steal too much food from the cichlids.

In the past I had a group of 6 snakeskin gourami with some more aggressive SA-CA cichlids and they were a great target fish. Skittish for the first week or 2 and then they were just shoaling around. Rainbows I find steal way too much food and are very aggressive feeders. Just my opinion, you can't go wrong with livebearers

The local Molly's are barely 2" long, too small I believe, if they were 3"+ I'd try them.. I did try some danios in a 40B with a few festae grow outs last summer, the danios were longer than the festae but were all killed within a week $60.. The 180g may make a difference. I like the ideas of live bearers due to the possible extra little food source. Gourami hadn't even touched my radar.. I'll keep looking!

Oh.. and since I removed the SD's the RTM hides most of the time... rest of the fish are out and about, she is the only one that is nervous. I'll give her time, its only been 4 days.

Swordtails are good target/dither fish, fast and tough. Gouramis are a little slow to be good target fish, they seem to take a beating...
