I believe you may have success with those 3 (at least for a time), and probably the acara too,
I know exactly what you mean about pleasing the kids, and it could be a learning interesting experience, no matter which way it goes.
I found talking about where my fish came from with my kids, why some would work and others not, showing maps of where they came from, would sometimes spark interest in the larger sense and place of the world.
@ duanes
Would the bocourti work with the vieja het and hrp ? Im not sure if the bocourti was reclassified or any of that.

I totally understand the mixing ca and sa but its more of a "family" tank that keeps my son involved. So far he likes bocourti, crytpoheros Pan, chocolates, super r d sev's

With any cichlid it can be a gamble. Ive had a midas that is classed as 'aggressive' that was one of my all time favorite and well behaved in a community. Ive also had another pearsei before my Porkchop that was insanely aggressive. So you never really know. I usually will buy three to four of a fish I am interested in as a permanent inhabitant and grow them out until I find the one that I feel would be the best match in terms of ability to get along with other fish. I sell off the rest and then focus on it. I like having a big focus fish in the tank that interacts and is the main attraction but at the same time plays well with others. Not sure if a bocourti would do that for you but they generally are pretty calm. Except in my case when I was trying to raise a bocourti and pearsei together... that is not a good mix. Those two were constantly fighting until the bocourti just became a bully and was rehomed.

Could a fenestratus work ? Would it clash with the het ? All my fish are 3 inch or less except for the metae who is mild mannnered
