Hello there I am Janneline from Germany

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you all for the greetings!

Oh, do some members here not like to explore and argue about the most natural way of keeping fish? :(

I look forward already to exciting discussions with you.

haha there is a very select crowd of folks who explore the all natural aquarium hobby...but an overwhelming majority of people, myself included, are filter freaks lol.

How do you keep your water quality up without filters? What is your method ffor aquarium maintenance besides water changes?

Haha,

@ predatorkeeper87 , you won't get a copy :).
Although it might be unbelievable that a freak like me got a husband, my man is still more freaky than me.

Very easy: Plants and ground. Evidently only with Lungfish.
And WC every now and then of course (regretfully).
I am still working on the way to copy our little natural garden-pond, which is full of live and never gets a waterchange.

Well this thread scored my attention 100% now. (who doesnt like freaks?!)

as for no filters...if you have adequate bio filtration, and by that I mean enough plants to completely use the nitrates in your water, then if its working and the fish are happy by all means do your thing girl.

Water changes however...are 100% neccessary in my book...even if you aren't removing nitrates from the water with them you are taking out hormones, and replenishing minerals that have been used up and absorbed by the plants and fish in the tank.

Ponds have a different chemistry and biology than in home aquariums. The shear amount of water vs. livestock is enough to negate water changes and filtration is handled more naturally in a pond exposed to actual nature lol.

On your arguments and comments about unfiltered tanks I fully agree.

Yes, my tanks are "jungles" on 6-8 cm mineral substrate. Furthermore there is a low density of fish (for example 1 Channa gachua in a 240 l tank). Additionaly, depending on the culinary preference of the fish, shrimps and snails act as cleaners.
Wouldn'n it be nice, to discuss about this topic in a separate thread? Or is there already one, which I could not find? I Think, there is a lot to learn from you. And that is, why I am here.

Nevertheless, I do also take care of some conventional filtered tanks (although, they're not on the whole conventional, but almost) :).

haha there is an endless supply of threads on this very topic.

And if your tanks are that understocked (one channa in a 240 for instance) then you can get away with super low maintenance haha.

Hi. It is time consuming and a lot of effort becoming a monster fish keeper. U have to learn everything first then gradually you will end up having an amazing set up yourself. Everyone prefers seeing big gorgeous fish than tetras and guppy's aha good look to you in your mission

Ouh, that sounds dissapointing :(. Probably I dont't keep monsterfish, but I am a monster myself! Is that not enough to enable me to become a membership on this forum?

I tried to send pictures but it didn't work.
I was not able to find a rule about the uploadable picturesize (my Englich is not very good).

Sorry, if I wastet your time.

Janneline

You have all right to be here ! and we all would love to see your fish (in my case, specially the c. gachua; I am a channa keeper myself).
As regards the unfiltered tanks, it is feasible, specially with labyrinth fish and channa (that are ver closely related).
Finally as regards the pics, the site has been having problems at the moment, so untill lthey are fixed you can upload your pictures in a site like imageshackand then copy the link to the post.

Maybe you could start by openning a thread in the snakehead forum with your gachua?

And in the loach sub-foruym you could post your 3m (10´) tank

p.s. to predatorykeeper87: the tank that holds the snakehead is a 240 lts; not a 240 gallon...

Yeah, my biggest tank is a 90g and my biggest fish is a 10" or so Oscar.

If anything I don't have a right to be here. Haha

This is a cool site with alot of cool members. You'll enjoy it
