Hobbyists vs Non-hobbyists ROUND 2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 75g set up in a retail space. My mom manages the store and it is a neat focal point.

I hate doing maintenance on the tank during business hours just do to the influx of asinine questions and comments.

I have no problems with people with genuine interest who have intelligent questions, but seriously 9/10 people walk by, ask a dumb question and say "I used to have fish but they all died" sure, I bet you walk up to people walking with dogs or baby strollers and say the same thing "I had one of those but it died"

The urge to be unpleasant is astounding.

One of my friends told me if you keep a pleco you don't need to do water changes, thank god he does not own a fish tank, also at Walmart a employee that works in the fish department said I could house 2 Oscars in a 29 gallon because of the inch per gallon rule. One time at petco the lady that works there told me that water changes aren't necessary, and that you can just stir the gravel and the filter will do the work, I asked her how will I get rid of my nitrates then, she said the filter will do that... I love water changes, to me they are fun, my tiger barbs bite my arm when I am siphoning the gravel.

I overheard a couple talking at a LFS about an alligator gar. The woman simply said " Honey, I don't care how big it gets because we can always do the right thing and release it when it's too big for our tank" and of course the wife is always right.

People who release non native fish into the ecosystem deserve to be euthanized. These idiots are why certain aspects of the hobby are outlawed in some regions IE no asian arowanas, potomotrygon rays, etc.

Try a vieja of any kind. My male synspilum loved to nip my arm. I guess that's my breidohri's job now.

+1 no one should release any kind of foreign animal. the fish industry isn't the only thing that suffers so does the reptile industry, really any exotics. and why its hard to get certain species for people who want/deserve to have them.

I too have heard of people who's answer was to "set free" an unwanted animal... makes me furious :irked:

I got one a couple years back. My mother delivered me a beautiful 5" female jack Dempsey in a coolwhip container filled with water. She intercepted it from some old lady she went to church with, who was going to release it into a glacial spring out in the state forest, that very day. . I doubt it would've destroyed the ecosystem, being that the water was 40*F... but it was still a stupid move. The lady bought it at petsmart of all places, and was surprised when it killed literally everything in her little friendly tropical community aquarium.

Anyway my Oscar got a surprise roommate. The fish survived and is healthy now

The reptile industry isn't has hard hit as the fish industry. In California, we have so many invasives that the state banned potomotrygon and all gars due to them being afraid of there being more invasives as there are way too many irresponsible fish owners. If you can't take care of it in the long run, give it to someone who can or don't get it to begin with. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.
