Senegal Bichir with Oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hopefully I'll be picking up a couple of Senegals and some bloodworms tomorrow. I'll try to post pictures here if I do.

Personally u gonna have problems on ur hands with that many oscars in a couple months and first hand experience it will be a pain in the ass getting food to those sens with just 1 or 2 oscars let alone 6

If I do end up getting them, they'll be put in a 10 gallon growout for tbe first little bit. They may not even be put in with the Oscars at all.

Even when the sens are of adequate size you're going going to have a bad time trying to feed. Polys take their time getting to food sometimes. Not a luxury the Oscars will afford them. The missed meals will accumulate and their appetites will decline. Youll be standing in front of the tank pulling out hair before long. Trust me on this one, I kept African cichlids and sens together when I first got into the hobby. It was a nightmare. Food didn't hit the bottom. If it did, it was gone in a few seconds. Ended up separating the sens in the end.

That's a lot of Oscars btw, you're going to need a huge set up for them down the road :p

Edit: if you do put them together, feed the Poly's after dark. Its a hit or miss strategy, but that's going to be the best bet more than likely.

Also a 100% full grown oscar can eat a full grown sen

There's a thread on the oscarfishlover forum somewhere with pics of a 16-17" beast. I had no idea they got that big until I saw that. My dad had some foot long guys when I was little. Thought that was the cap. Nope. haha.

Just a note... i have an adult Oscar ( no longer in the sugar hungry growing stage) with a large ornate and endli whom I feed massivore. Yes the Oscar will eat a couple pellets of massive but most sink to the bottom and the polys get it. The after dark idea is a good one too

I kept bichirs with my oscar in the past with no issues. As others have stated, it won't be an issue unless the oscars can slurp them up like spaghetti.

With all the fish at 2" you are probably ok for the time being depending on how fat the bichirs are. The oscars will grow faster than them, so perhaps you'll have to move the oscars to the bigger tank and let the bichirs catch up in a different tank. Having bought lots of polys over the years, I have had to spread them out among my tanks depending on size to prevent cannibalism. There is always a change that you'll get a runt or something and it will never catch up to the oscars, though.

Just going to add you generally would like to give each fully grown oscar 75 gallons of tank, so 6 is around 450 gallons for 6 full grown oscars, but i think a 8x2x2 would be fine but the bichirs may have trouble getting food. That stock tank will have to be ready really soon because oscars grow incredibly fast and will need the extra space.
