Why can't I keep wolf fish alive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I switched the heater out but I don't think that is the problem, but why not I had another heater. I'm just trying to leave the tank alone cause he is scared of me. His head is all banged up and dis colored but I see no evidence of an infection or fungus so I'm not going to treat for anything. I'm just hoping he settles in at this point without killing himself, I m at a loss of what else to do.
I do have one more question/thought. The tank is in, I'd say a medium traffic area, just me passing by the tank fairly often. Could that be a factor? Do wolves need to be in a fish room that you only go into a couple times a day? I do have that option but I wanted the fish upstairs. Any thoughts on that? Does anyone have wolf fish in their bedrooms or offices???

It will be fine in a high traffic area. Mine used to come to the front every time someone passed hoping for food.
I doubt it's the heater but no harm in checking. I've kept them in tanks without heaters through the warmer months and they still jump for the first while.
One of the LFS here stopped bringing them in because they kept jumping and hitting their heads and escaping.
It will stop eventually.

So this is what the fish looks like now, I don't even know how it did this to itself in three nights. Is there anything I can do at this point?

Even though you have alot of coverage ty adding adding a pic pipe that he could comfortable fit in and feel secure. Mine loved that

I hate to say it but.... That wolf may be dead in 24 hrs. Looks like a terrible bacterial infection has set in and it's eating it alive. From the head back. You can see where the slime coat has been eaten all the way back to the rear of it's head. Good luck though.

If it were me, I would drain the tank, clean and disinfect it and start over. That infection looks like the one I mentioned earlier. Eats anything new. In hours or days in your case. I tried everything, but resorted to starting over. Just a terrible memory now. Once again, good luck.

If it's still alive in the morning I'll go get maracyn 1 and 2 to try and save it, I think it's gonna be dead by morning though. It's not the tank specifically because I've had fish in and out of there a lot and no problems at all, but, I may turn it into a reptile cage if this one dies.

I've had your same problem with red wolves! I usually get them around 3-5 inches, they seem okay for a few hours. Start jumping... Two of mine found their way out of tiny holes in the back. The others just bashed their heads in like yours. Let us know how he does.

It's strange cause I have always kept red wolves for years and never one have done similar. Hopefully little red is ok. Any updates?
