Why can't I keep wolf fish alive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not looking good this morning, I think it's blind in one eye now. Here are pics of the tank and I tried to get a pic of the wolf, it's head is turning white now. I thought about moving him but now I'm thinking I might have to try and treat the possible infection he has on his head now. Any advice, should I try moving him to another tank, I'm afraid that will kill it nowImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1422893712.639483.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1422893727.136450.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1422893737.399853.jpg

The only other fish in there are some platies for food. I have no idea what is happening at night but each morning his head looks like it's disintegrating. Actually it looks just like what happens to salmon after they spawn. There body just starts rotting away. This has been a community tank for years with no problem. I have bred various cichlids in there with no problem at all but the wolf fish, I don't know what is happening.

Change the scape. Add some larger cover big pieces of driftwood or decent sided rock caves. Maybe a few barbs or something he can't eat yet for him to beat on

If going to do any treatment, drop the water even more, can't gain speed to jump if only like half a foot of water above him. Something must be wrong

These are just really jumpy fish in my experience.
I've kept a couple and they all jumped and destroyed their faces, however they all made full recoveries with no scarring. They are very resilient. After about a month of jumping, they calmed down.
With all the driftwood and plants that I had, it didn't stop any of them, they just seemed to stop on their own.

Well, thanks bottles, makes me feel I'm not totally alone in this problem. I added a bunch more wood and structure and stuff. Also, what temperature do you guys keep your erys at, it's 76 right now but like to get some real world opinions, thanks

I tend to be with Oddball. Check it with a voltage meter. On more than one setting , while every thing in the tank is on. Sometimes you can't feel it unless you have a hangnail and are grounded. Spend a little money on some dither fish. Everyone else has good ideas as well. Good luck.

IMO ,you have a great looking setup ,with plenty of cover. Collumnaris, I believe from memory anyway, is the condition that the salmon develop after the spawn. I have had one type of bacteria infection that would not bother the fish that were already in the tank, but would kill anything new added to the aquarium in an hour or two. I drained the tank cleaned it throughly and stopped the infection. Seems to come from feeder fish maybe. It's terrible stuff. Good luck.

I've got to side with Odd and Zeke on this one. That tank looks very well decorated for the wolf (you actually have more decorations in that tank than I have in my 40, 90, 120, 144, 180, and 240 COMBINED), and the size is more than adequate right now. The only time I've had a fish act like that was when one of my heaters was leaking voltage into the tank. Just like Zeke said, I only noticed it because I had a hangnail. Heater's aren't always on, so that may be why you did not feel anything. If you have an extra heater, it might not hurt to switch them out.

best of luck! I hope you find the root of this problem.
