IDK what I want from this hobby!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think what you are going thru is normal. maybe you can add different elements into your hobby that deal with something other than acquiring new fish... live plants (both aquatic and terrestrial), local collecting (driftwood, rocks, native fish/plants/inverts), and/or diy projects (stands, lighting, filtration, backgrounds, etc) any of these is sure to ignite a spark and draw you away from purchasing new fish all the time. DIY really worked for me; there is a certain pride that a finished project brings.

PS. no pink eye for me :grinno:

Let me tell ya somehting, you deal with a Softball sized african bullfrog and its titanic stinky poops and you better wear eye protection. Otherwise its pinky eye theater for you! :)

LMAO! you are cracking me up! this species just got put on the NEVER list as I don't want to be cleaning "Titanic" poo's. my box turtle is bad enough; his waterbowl (plastic tote) is his toilet also, the rest of the tank stays clean though.

Get silver dollars.

My SD's eat their own poo q: Tank stays poopless. :D

Aquatic amphibians are high powered monsters that have to eat constantly. The problems you will have with them will not stem from boredom. There's a lot going on in my tanks than just fish. I content myself to change the back grounds, plants and decor of my tanks.
My new thing with aqua-scaping is driftwood "trees" tying javan ferns and others to the end of anchored driftwood. We are artists so we have a lot of fun painting crazy backgrounds as well and when we tire of them we put another up.

I respect your willingness to admit this because some 'religiously' fanatic fish keepers may bash you for being irresponsible.

But the truth is what you are going through is normal.

I had quit fish keeping for many years. One day I just decided to give everything away to the fish store.

It has been over 2 weeks since I got back to fish keeping. I just missed the water and fish in my life as I have been keeping fish since I was a kid.

But I didn't know what fish to get. It felt like starting everything for the first time. I just went back to the list of fishes I know. I had my ideas but didn't know the outcome of how I would feel about keeping them.

How do you find out? By keeping them.

Now I have 4 fishes:

An Emperor Snakehead

A Platinum Northern Snakehead

A Jaguar Cichlid

A Red Tiger Oscar

And I got criticised for having one of the worse choices of fish. That none of them are compatible. That I am awaiting disaster. I still get criticised especially for having a mixed choice of Snakeheads who have in fact been getting along just fine.

The only problem is my Jaguar Cichlid. If I get rid of the Cichlids or separate the Snakeheads I will get pointed out by these 'I told you so' members who love to play the 'right and wrong' game. And use me as an example to teach others about irresponsible fish keepers. Oh yes such MFK warriors exist.

But they just need to chill out and let you experiment and find your special fish. Just like dating, just like shopping, just like love. You have to know to know.

So what is the solution to this vicious cycle? Do I just keep it going until I find the perfect stock???? Do I ignore the urge to change my stock and just deal with what I have???? I'm just not sure what to do.

I really don't have an answer. Very rarely do I get the urge to get rid of fish. Everyday I think of what kind of fish I could add... then the next day I think of another fish. It helps me a little to be undecided on the exact fish and I end up getting nothing. That's how I've manged to keep my tank on the light side(stocked).
