What type of substrate do you guys recommend?

Planning to put him on natural red sand. Would gravel be better?

I don't think it really matters to them. I know kendragon has his over gravel, dunno what size though, and he's experienced the same behavior

They're easy to keep. They do fine in a wide range of temperatures and aren't particularly aggressive. Mine eat everything from veggie flakes to frozen seafood. I like keeping mine on sand because I catch them digging through the sand to pick up uneaten bits of food often. Very cool fish all around.

They are aggressive, especially toward shiny/silver fish.
