Yes it's a real fish, no its not a scam it's called Utah pricing in anything that is worth something becomes worth nothing. I've talked to the guy. I just honestly don't think any pleco is even worth that much. It's just a pleco to me. I even thought about buying to resell buy why bother with the risk during shipping.
