Juvie pike ID - marmorata?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Quick update and pics.

He is about 8" now. Had him about 6 months ago and has double in size. Doesn't seem to bother any other fish beside my IT for some reason, and only happening when the lights are on.

You pike experts decide what it is really at this point. It still has dots on its face but not as much as it used to. The black horizontal bar goes off and on, but it usually looks faded. The lower fins and tail have a red hue. While the inside of its tail and upper dorsal fin has a bluish-purple hue. Its back also appears to have vertical darker shades. Recently, its belly has develop more of a pinkish pastel color, than it's olive color.

Still in my 110, will be moved soon to my 300, hoping it can handle the bigger fishes.

To be honest, I still have doubt if it's even a marm. Kinda hard to have a sure positive ID when the photos you find online for marmorata look nothing like mine.

Anyone know which variant I have. John says from Trombetas, however, it doesn't look like it. I'm also thinking female since the dorsal fin shows a great amount of white.

He is hooked to Hikari carnivore sinking pellets, and couldn't care less about cichlids pellets I tried.

Lulu its 200% marmorata put it on my life lol. I might just get 4 from John she looks so nice yours is a female btws. John knows his stuff it's probably from the rio Trombetas I can't tell the difference btwn fish from the tributaries, didn't really think there is a difference. There is a wide variation of colors and patterns on juvenile marms even within the same spawn. I think we'll just have to trust John on this one for what rio it came from (not that it really matters that much)

It is indeed a marmorata but I think it's the Tapajos strain. I had the trombetas strain, thus my misdiagnosis.

Hmmm looks trombetas to me although the pike is only a subadult....
John is also a very knowledgable and reputable person and if he says it's from the rio trombetas it's probably from the rio trombetas :)
However I believe the reason you misdiagnosed it wasn't because of the collection point, but because there aren't many pictures of baby marmorata (there are actually but no one looks at them) and there are subtle differences btwn them and sp. Venezuela that if you don't pay attention to you won't know. They're rather drab as babies and often juveniles.

300% Marmorata.

All the trombetas I've found in pics have that distinguished lateral line full of darker blotches. I will keep u guys updated. Did you get any Crenicichla444?

I honestly thought the pike I got was a Strigata.

Well yours isn't fully mature yet so obviously not all of its patterning is in yet, but I guess time will tell although I wouldn't doubt John, collection point isn't something one can simply get wrong... I'm positive it's a trombetas
I could see your reasoning thinking it was a strigata since younger marmorata would show the humeral blotch and no other pattern yet, although logically it wouldn't make sense because true strigata are extremely rare in the hobby, I would've just assumed it was a marmorata.
No unfortunately I haven't got one yet, I'm not sure on what to stock my 300 gallon yet with. Your marm looks really nice, the thought of a few of those swimming around would be cool. Keep us updated on pics your marm is turning into a real beauty
