500 Gallon Journal Input Accepted

I am glad to see there are some other fans of clown and panda barbs out there. I have six panda (also known as melon) barbs at 1.5" in with a bunch of other barbs species and have found them to be a very tight knit group. Much more than rosey, black ruby, bala sharks and odessa barbs. That habit would be very cool to see in a large tank such as the OP`s.

I can`t tell you how happy I am to see this thread. I have been planning a large tank for quite a while and following this is answering some of my questions. I also am leaning toward smaller, non-life threatening species as opposed to giant fish that always look to me like they need a larger tank, no matter how big their home is!
 
Looks like I'll add panda "melon" barbs to the list because they have a great temperament. The clown barbs are a little more robust it seems.

Thanks for input and suggestions....with all this snow a stand is on hold for a little bit until we thaw out.

Good idea.... always better to have more of the same filters than a bunch of random canisters!

Yea...thats what I was thinking and I'm just concerned with flow, but I can work on that. Can always go without wavemakes if I have to, just keep in mind this is going to be a community tank and not your typical 500 gallon of large sa/ca or arro's and such.

I'd think that will be plenty of turnover...and a ***** to clean all those filters...lol

Well, I currently have 8 filters I clean on other tanks that I'm currently selling. So, this will actually be less believe it or not :)

Plus, the need to clean all of the filters at once will never happen. Just keep an eye on flow rates. Lotsa Eheim mech has been my recipe for lengthy cleaning intervals.

I love the idea of the BIG community tank. Smaller fish with lotsa space makes for more natural behaviors.

First of all: Dream tank. Hands down. Awesome!! A different kind of /\/\onster that has its very own beauty, and I am delighted to see you pull it off in a way you know you'll love.

As for UV: I also0 had never been using a UV for the 3 decades that I've been keeping fish. Then I added one 2 years ago, because I realized that in nature, UV from sunlight penetrates the shallow waters where our fish live in. I wanted to replicate that, I like to imagine that I've been seeing an improvement in fish quality. I, too am religious about water changes, i.e. I have a drip. If you are thinking about UV: I have my Aqua Ultraviolet Classic Series UV w/ Wiper 25W hooked up to the outlet of my 2262, they are compatible, I matched the UV device and wattage to the pump output.

Should be a beautiful tank. I'm currently doing something similar with my 750. After years of keeping rays it's a nice change.
