That Strong Glue Smell When You Buy a New Tank

I was afraid to get another glass tank after that but the shopkeeper was willing to replace it with a lower price along with a strong stand (I had placed the previous one on the floor upon double layers of foam padding).

My new replacement tank just arrived and it has glue smell all over. Does it mean it has just been glued? Should I wait before filling water?

And do you just fill with fresh water let it cycle and add fish? I'm just going to use the old filter media to quicken the cycling process.

Above 40F, it takes a week for silicone sealer to fully cure. Your tank is most likely safe to fill. The frame and seams may simply have absorbed the acetic acid odor of other more recently assembled aquariums. If you want to err on the safe side, give the tank until this weekend before filling.

The glass is 0.6cm thick. How much of water should I fill? This tank is 18 inches high / wide and 4 feet in length.

I've been uncertain since the previous tank broke. Don't want to put so much pressure on it. Not even gonna put driftwood or rocks. Only a thin layer of substrate with plants.

I believe it's only 120G if the width and height were 2 feet. But yes I do feel the glass is thin.

I have another question, when you guys bought your tanks did they come under warranty?

Yup, 4x2x2 is a 120 gal. If you aren't sure of gallons you can calculate it yourself. Just take the dims in inches and multiply them. So in this case, 48x24x24= 27648. Take that number and divide it by 231. 27648/231= 119.688. Round up for 120 gal.

Above you mentioned the tank is 18" tall and wide, can you confirm which one it is? At 18" I feel like that glass is thin, but it *should* be ok. 18" would be a 65 gal tank. At 24" I would be bringing the tank back. Not a chance I'd even leave the store with a 6mm glass tank 24" tall.

Thank you for the reply. Yes I measured the tank it's 18 inches high, 18 inches wide and 48 inches in length. I agree it's thin and I will not choose a tank this thin again. I just ordered and bought it from my nearby local lfs. It sucks that my fish keeping experience has become like this lately. Lessons learned.

How high would you advise me to fill the water?

Ok, so that would be what they call a 65 gal, a bit shorter than a 55 gal but wider. You should be ok filling it fully. I'd just be careful working in the tank and make sure it is supported properly.

This hobby can be rough at times, whether it be a leak, dead fish or a number of other things. We all go through it at some point, some worse than others. A leaking 120 gal is a pretty bad one but hopefully you are onto better things. It will turn around for you.

The shopkeeper brought it to his lfs with his truck, prepared it and delivered it to my house. I assume it's built by a manufacturer but I'll ask about this.

The cover is a black hard plastic cover, hopefully not too heavy for the thin glass. I'll post a picture of the tank.
