There is a reason why cheatas hunt gazelles and not zebras. How ever on the flip side Cougars can take down elk.

Bull no question. It takes at least a trio take take down a water buffalo. 1 had zero chance.

I grew up watching nature shows and still do. i'm gonna drop some knowledge in here in a bit
 
lions will take on buffalo by themselves

cheetah do hunt zebras, kudus, wildebeests and other herbivores much bigger than them

hyenas are not only scavengers but actively hunt alone, in pairs or in groups

African wild dogs are not hyenas, LOL. African wild dogs and hyenas are enemies.

hyenas are more cat than they are dog, contrary to popular belief
 
@ 6:40 you see a lion go for a buffalo alone. I've actually seen an adult lion kill an adult buffalo on a nature show before but I can't find any footage. of course lions vs buffalo one on one, the lion will be the underdog. but they have been known to get kills.
