From what I understod there is a small chance you can get a functional group of pikes within the Lugubris family, are there any one that is known to work Better as a group then others?

Planning a 300 gallon tank so their Will be room for a few.

Ive always been scared to mix due to the high cost of pikes if you suffer mortalities. I would buy them young and in groups if I were to attempt them and stick to the lugs that stay around 12 to 14 inches in a 8ft tank.

I've seen pics and threads where it has worked with 2 pairs in a tank together. Ensure that they are close in size and temperment.

Good luck.

I'd stay away from lents and cincta since they are more aggro. My tapajos seem more mellow. Lents and cinctas are killers.

Maybe try some tapajos and zebrina together. I saw a YouTube clip of them working together.

I agree with mrrobxc Tapajos while aggressive seem ime to be more tolerant of tankmates then say Tocantins and the like. I have a large female Zebrina and she is by far the least aggressive pike I've owned. I've seen Zebrina kept in groups in several youtube vids and all the Zebrina looked free of injury, even fins where completely intact and I saw no chasing. I've also seen Atabapo kept together in groups but the tank was pretty barren and the fish did show signs of injury but they seemed to be a pretty stable group. If you can get your hands on Atabapo that may be the way to go as not long ago Dan/COA had babies from a captive spawn and was selling 3-4 inchers for $30 each. At that price they're one of the more reasonable of the pikes to buy and maybe you could try a raising a group of juvies out together. Unfortunately he sold them out pretty fast but you could contact and let him know your interested and maybe he can get an idea from the source when they expect another spawning. Here's a couple of vids of pikes in groups.

Thanks guys for your answers. I need you to know Im in Sweden and the Crenicichla market aint big here!

The Abatapo or Tapajos are considerable options for sure!

I LOVE the Zebrinas. But the price on those here are 2600 USD (not kidding).

I have seen a video where someone had several pikes in one tank, I am talking like 7-10 pikes in the same tank. It had a buttload of pvc pieces in the tank, probably 18-20 pieces stacked in rows and pyramids. They said having a crazy amount of cover and hiding spaces is what made it work. I would be nervous as all get out to try it.

I have a lent and lepidota together in a tank. Let's just say I have second thoughts now :)

I had a lepidota female with my lents before. The lents kept it hiding in a corner only coming out to eat. It survived but it was a sad picture. I ended up giving the lepidota to the lfs.

It is true. I see lepidota hiding sometimes. But it has its own attitude. I managed to balance the power equation a little bit by adding a Jag. Now its calm in the realm :what:

Years ago someone here kept 7-9 foot long atabapo I were kept in a fairly bare tank with a large Asian aro. Was a nice tank he has a few vids on YouTube. Also crenicichla vittata have been kept in groups as adults.
I've mixed pikes successfully but you need to do it with caution. Rn I have 3 marmorata and they dominant one is really not liking the other two lately. He's showing adult coloring while the others are clearly in Juvie dress. Nothing serious yet but I think I'm going to seperate them for a bit.... U can also crowd them like u would African cichlids that's also a good method
