The real point is you said caring for a fish that's dull and drab is harder when it gets older, no? LOL

Yes they get large. 3 simple facts:

1) They get large
2) They need cool, oxygenated water
3) They do better in schools

I think we can agree on the three above points you mentioned. :)

Actually, they look better as adults.
Young...they look great with bands.
Juvi....not so good looking.
Adults....awesome with red.

Couldn't agree with you more! Like mentioned before they don't like warm water, they like cool clean water. Wes had one that was over 24". It was really neat looking.

Is this one typical-looking for an adult or an oddball? None of the adults I happened to see in photos looked like that.

I think Big Jay is correct, the red is breeding colors. I am caring for a 20" one for someone which is similar in shape but no red. Stripe along lateral line is a sign of young adult. A true adult is long and ugly with no hump.

Yeah, a quick image search on Myxocyprinus asiaticus turns up roughly half looking rather unremarkable and half looking pretty striking, like this one. Too bad it is not that coloration all the time. It'd be a nice 3' alternative to a reef grouper or snapper.
