Is my 75 gallon tank overstocked?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont know i have no experience with rainbows...my concern would be how aggressive can they be if paired up. Me i would leave the severum as the centerpiece of the tank and with all that schooling going on it would look great. Im trying to convince my son to get rehome the rainbow fish we use for dithers and go with tiger barbs say 10ish i love the way they school.

Wait for others to chime in about the rainbows cichlids though. Thanks for the compliments but its all stuff ive learned from other members

That sounds like a cool idea having a centerpiece more peaceful severum (I personally like the super red ones) going around the tank with schooling going all around the tank. I might remove the rainbow shark as well cause I heard it grows to about 6" too.

Perhaps my tank would look like this.

1x severum (or could I squeeze in a pair?)
8-10x tiger barbs
7x serpae tetra
4x cory cats

And call it a day.

Yea tiger barbs are really cool they school really tight and are in constant movement. They even school with my serpae tetras too I'm sure you won't regret it should you get some.

I'm sure under your care any fish would thrive in your tank. Your oscar was very cool though. :)

If I remove the convict would the following stocking be okay:

x1 severum
x8 tiger barbs
x7 serpae tetra
x1 rainbow shark
x4 cory cats
x5 rainbow cichlid

Thanks

I think you're fine as far as room and bio load. But the shark may not like to cory cats in the future.

That would work too as long as the severums got along as adults. Barbs may or may not nip at the tetra. Cory do better in bigger groups. You have room, and PLENTY of filtration for more. You're really running two 2217's?

I dont know if i would put a pair in a 75. I think that stocking you just posted sounds cool. I have an argentea in a 75. When i had him in a 55 with other grow outs (other cichlids) he was a s.o.b but when i put him in the 75 by himself with a group of tiger barbs he was cool with them keeps them in what looks like a bait ball. As long as they get out of his way quick enough he leaves them alone.

Yeah those red sevs are awesome

Oh yeah i totally agree with you about getting attached to fish but for some reason not the schooling/dither fish....i change dithers like socks

Yes, I run two 2217's, one setup on each side in my 75 gallon tank. Given that, how much more tiger barbs, tetras, and corys would you add, in addition to the severum pair? Do severums really grow up to 12" in captivity? I'm thinking 8" to 10"..

While i understand that you wouldn't put a severum pair, do you think it can be done in a 75 without compromising water quality?

I have a 55 with a single 2217 that has 6 full grown silver dollars and probably 25 to 30 tiger barbs. So maybe that would give you some idea about how many you could keep in a 75.

Depending on the kind of cory, I am going to assume they are not dwarfs, or an extremely large species, I would have a dozen. I would also have a dozen of the barbs and tetra.

Sevs will stay around 8 inches in my experience with them. A pair may very well work in a 75. Even if they are a breeding pair. If they are a pair, I don't think anything you are keeping in the tank would bother them too much. You definitely have the room and filtration for it. And if the are not a pair, there maybe enough room for both to have their own territory without too much fighting. Who knows. Its worth a try though if you want to.

Sure i dont think any of the advice is wrong/right

As far as water quality....you can adjust to that...more wc, plants, purigen to help keep nitrates down. Thing is space...if they pair up great, what if they dont will they get along or have issues. You wo t know unless you try.

I just like lower maintenance less bioload set ups for me.

After considering your inputs and my own research, I have come to the following final stocking:

1x Severum
7x serpae tetra
8x tiger barb
5x cory cats

Both tiger barbs and serpae tetras have deep bodies for a severum to eat (I hope).

Thanks everyone for your inputs!!

Nice avatar!! Now i'm having second thoughts of getting a chocolate cichlid instead LOL

I swear i was gonna suggest one no lie. Since you were settled i figured to leave it be.
