Hoplias Australis

Sounds like fancy jive talk for Mala..... lol.

IF it was labeled as Australis it wouldn't be here and I'd have a few more real Lacs swimming here.

IF you were looking for a Tatf and was sold a Fatf would you be happy cause they're both Tigerfish? What if you planned on keeping with Armatus? Guess what? You just bought an expensive feeder cause of the huge differences in max size.

So if it became a new species 6 years ago why aren't we using the proper names when selling this fish?

It's like calling BDs Leos or Castexi Falkneri. "Technically" is one thing, but I would think we're all big enough fish geeks that we don't need to generalize stuff.....

that has an interesting look, eyes are big, almost looks a little like aimara. As for ID., do you know how it was identified as lacerdae? As I am seeing 3 different kinds or more coming out of that region. non of the 3 that I have look anything like that, and the ones that DBJunkie got is different as well. So how can we be so sure that one is not the other and the other is not the one?

So let me see if I have this right.......

Parallel jaw lines = big Hoplias. Lacerdae/Aimara

V jaw lines = little Hoplias. Australis/Mala

Do I have it correct or am I missing something?

I urge you to check out post 13 on page 2 and post 24 on page 3. Same information. But look at the date - WOW. Hobbyists are able to tell the difference before "science" seperates them.

To you Australis might be some rare cool sought after fish. To me - I payed for a Lac so that when my Aimara gets big there's a chance they can live together, so regardless of what species the "little Hoplias" I bought is at the end of the day it will still end up as Aimara food unless I sell this fish that was mis ID'd in the first place.

Can you honestly tell me you can tell Australis and Mala apart by jaw line? Why or why not? I can't. So what makes them different? The $180 extra you pay for the "green"? Or do they call them Green Lacs cause of the profit associated with them?

Not getting what you paid for is part of the hobby, I understand that. Just don't want to see other hobbyists looking for Lacs getting duped into buying Australis. The guy I got the fish from was such a friggin pain to deal with in the first place I'd rather save myself the elevated blood pressure and just move on with life.

So, back to the question, can you tell the difference between Mala and Australis jaw lines or do they look the same?

Ken mistakenly gave me the wrong wolf fish but he worked with me on it i wanted to keep the one i have so he gave me a big discount on a Lacerdae but i love my Australis but i dont think hes gonna go out of his way to catch Australis which im told is harder to find in the river then Lacerdae
