Only easy way I see is counting pores and even then that could be hard. And that pic is of a lac and mala not australis.
really so your telling me that the guy that runs those tours in Uruguay is wrong? oh and those are his pics btwOnly easy way I see is counting pores and even then that could be hard. And that pic is of a lac and mala not australis.
I was only talking about Australis since they only have 5... I know it's more than just pores, I was giving the easy way I see to figure out if it's a Australis. It's not just pores. It's jaw line, pores, lateral line count and shape of the tail.
Get a wolf with 4 pores and say mala and forget about intermedius and then you slap yourself silly cause u didn't count lines and forgot the collection point. Also availability.
All of the above mentioned is how they are supposed to be ID'd.
Just to mention in prior threads when Felipe was replying himself here, he mentioned there was mala, lac and aust in Uruguay. Now there are cf malas there which is another argument.
The pic posted with the two wolves under jaw shots side by side is mala and lac per Felipe in the thread. This was a reasoned out approach. Could always argue one for the other.
The color of wolves don't matter too much for identification as it varies so but the green is great looking.
DB is right. You pay high prices and you should get what you want. Especially being presented as such.
Just a reminder that I'm not an expert or been in the field. Have and had lots of wolves. Better to always learn something.
Appreciate Ken, wes, and other vendors for brining in fish that are hard to find and easily identified and misidentified.
Jacob, nice wolf!

Also if you go back to the thread where that pic was first shared it was felipe who had another person he was with take it. He identified it as mala and lac. If you can't take my word for it you can easily look for the thread and read it for yourself. So if you're saying someone else provided it you're wrong and if your saying it's an australis and lac going off of Felipe's word, you're wrong again. And I'd trust his word much more than yours... not saying everything you say is wrong or anything. Just in this case I believe Felipe.really so your telling me that the guy that runs those tours in Uruguay is wrong? oh and those are his pics btw

I think your conclusion is not true.So let me see if I have this right.......
Parallel jaw lines = big Hoplias. Lacerdae/Aimara
V jaw lines = little Hoplias. Australis/Mala
Do I have it correct or am I missing something?
I urge you to check out post 13 on page 2 and post 24 on page 3. Same information. But look at the date - WOW. Hobbyists are able to tell the difference before "science" seperates them.
To you Australis might be some rare cool sought after fish. To me - I payed for a Lac so that when my Aimara gets big there's a chance they can live together, so regardless of what species the "little Hoplias" I bought is at the end of the day it will still end up as Aimara food unless I sell this fish that was mis ID'd in the first place.
Can you honestly tell me you can tell Australis and Mala apart by jaw line? Why or why not? I can't. So what makes them different? The $180 extra you pay for the "green"? Or do they call them Green Lacs cause of the profit associated with them?
If I remember correctly Microlepis has the v folds as well not just mala.

I went back to the thread and he didn't take that picture so I think it was Wes. I screenshotted the pics he posted showing lac mala and australis. I'll post it.Felipe Cantera is who told me
