Mystery cichla grow out

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hopefully it is sooner rather than later, it is the small space that is causing all the aggression.

how often are you doing wc's on this tiny 13g?

I've sized up the oscars again and i'm starting to think they're big enough to hold their own in the bigger tank. So I'll be looking to move them over hopefully this weekend. Problem is I'm also growing out a green sunfish and 2 senegals in the same tank. So I'll probably move the senegals back over to the 13 and leave the green in the 55 with these guys. It's only about an inch bigger, so shouldn't be too much of an issue. it's pretty heavily planted too with plenty of places to hide.

this tank gets ~50% wc's weekly. It loses about a gallon of water every 3-4 days due to evaporation, so every time i top off, i remove some extra and basically do a 1-2g water change. Every time i check the parameters, the only one that's high is nitrates, and those are only around 40.

40 Nitrates is pretty high; ideally you want 20 or below.

So I posted about a month ago asking for an ID on some cichla at my LFS. I wound up getting 5, so I figured I might as well do a grow out thread, because why not. :D

Day 1: At LFS

Day 1: Back home in the tank (Sorry for the bad quality)

About 20 days in I lost one. It was obviously the "runt of the litter". It was barely eating and getting bullied. I did my best to feed in two locations to allow it to get some food also, but it just wasn't eating even when it got the chance. By the time I cleared up room in my refugium, it was too late. :(

Day 26: So then there were 4.

What's the fish in your profile pic? I swear it's been bothering me ever since XD is it a fire eel or some kind of goby?

So good news, just transferred over the oscars from the 55. Did a 50% water change on it. Gonna do another tomorrow and measure up the bigger Senegal and green sunfish to see how they compare to these guys. If they're too big I'll rearrange some things and move the green outside and the bigger Senegal to the 13g. Long story short, these guys will be in the 55 by the end of the weekend
