Hi all :)
I'm going to sterilize a tank, a canister, and a hob filter. I've used a 20:1 bleach mixture in the past with success. My question is about the 2 filters. Do I actually run the bleach through the filters (without media of course) or just
soak them in the solution? How long do you guys recommend? Thanks :)

when I sterilized filters in the past I just soaked them in a bleach solution. usually between 30 minutes to an hour. I'd fill the canister with your mix, take the hoses and connections and just sink them inside the canister, and then soak what won't fit in a bucket. you could kill two birds with one stone and fill the tank with the mix and disassemble the hob and put all the parts in the tank as well.

Just remember to soak everything in water with dechlorinator before reusing. Water rinsing and soaking doesn't always remove all the bleach residue. Learned this the hard way a while back.

Yes definitely soak any items u put in bleach with dechlorinator prior to placing back into the aquarium. I usually rinse the stuff off clean water after its been in bleach water then fill a bucket high enough to submerge it then add a crap load of prime or amquel and leave it soaking for an hr or so then rerinse it off then add it back to the aquarium.

This is exactly what I do

I do plan on doing everything at once. Actually I have 4 canisters to sterilize. I have a big tub I'll use. So, only soak the filters, not run them, and only for about an hour? Oh yeah, and definitely on top of the declor during rinsing, thank all of you :)

ya, no need to run them, the water will get to where it needs too. good luck!

In over three decades, I have never seen the need to sterilize tanks or filters....
Why?
