Welcome ! I am a keeper of Wels, so I loved your posting. I did not realize this species stayed this small. Much more manageable! Love your fish.

Thanks for welcoming! You're keeping wels! They really are magnificent creatures! Well, I heard in the continental Asia, like Korea and China, they could get bigger up to 4 ft long. At most areas in Japan, they rarely get bigger than 2 ft. The Japanese freshwater ecosystem lacks much of piscivorous fish species, so this catfish is the apex predator in many waters.

Welcome!

That is something definitely on the rarer side here on this forum. You certainly spoil that fish with the diverse feeding which is a strong indicator of your commitment to your pet.

You should post this thread in the 'catfish forum' because those guys will definitely want to see this.

Thanks for posting. This is a cool thread. We hear quite a bit about fish from Asia, but decidedly little about fish from Japan. I for one am very curious to know more about the native species of Japan. Feel free to share what you know. For Example: I know that the Mayor of Chicago gave a half dozen blue gill to the Emperor, the promptly escaped, and are now a nuisance. However, I know almost nothing about what the species they are displacing. Thanks again for posting and helping to keep us informed about what is out there.

1 question: how long did it take to grow from 2cm to 45cm?

Thank you for the compliment! I do my best for critters I own cuz I know their freedom to roam in the nature was stripped away by me (though, this Catfish and upside-down cats are the only ones from wild in my captivity. Others are all CB). I will try to post this in the Catfish forum, but its it OK to doble-post a same thread? Anyway, thanks!

Thanks for welcoming and the question. You know so much about the situation concerning bluegills in Japan. Well, bluegills are now considered, along with blackbasses (both largemouth and smallmouth), as highly invasive pests in Japan. It is illegal to transfer them live, and posses one. Unfortunately, it is true that they could mean so much harm to the natives in this country. As I mentioned in previous comments, the Japanese freshwater ecosystems has naturally sustained very few piscivorous fish species, so any highly predatorial fish from other environment could cause so much damage. Bluegills not only eat small fish, but also the eggs of the native species. Also, they protect their eggs and youngs, so their morality rate is quite high, while Japanese fish don't have this kind of behavior. In fact, the bluegills are the only fish, other than Kois and other bigger fish, found in some waters in Japan.
But, it's wrong to blame these fish. Humans are the ones responsible for all the problems.

Oh, and answering your other question, it grew to like 40 cm in 2 years and has stayed in this size since. If you feed them like crazy, they could attain the size in less than a year, but I kinda controlled the growth by not overfeeding it.
¡Gracias a tí!

Nice fish, I have the same fish. Had him for about three months. I heard they get to 3ft in the wild but like you said probably stay smaller in a tank. Mine is very inactive during the day but active at night. Here's a pic of mine. There is another member here-JLnuygen who has a pretty big one
