Water conditions

Assuming you adhere to a strict wc schedule, that is appropriate water amount and time intervals, you nitrates shouldn't really hit 40ppm. I can't speak for everyone, but I never test my nitrates. Reason being because a wc is happening whether it reads 10 or 40 ppm. I want my fish in the cleanest water that I can provide. If I didn't work 70+ hrs a week I would probably do small daily wc or bi daily

I do my water changes Friday and monday. I like to do wc after the weekend because the weekend is when I'm home the most. So the fish get live food and extra food. Then Monday night I'll do a wc and clean up all the fish crap left from eating so much. Friday I do them to clean whatever mess has occurred during the week. I don't like to have guest over on the weekend and have fish crap all over in my tank. Filter pads... I use canister filters. I try not to open them very often. I'll rinse my mechanical filtration off maybe every 6 to 8 weeks. I just keep on eye on my spray bars to see what the water flows like. If it's really low I know I have filter mantanice to do. For bio filtration there is no need to mess with that. I haven't touched any bio filters in probably 2 years.

Well I have a marineland canister filter for a 100 gallon tank. I've had it for maybe 2 weeks now and I'm noticing that my tubing is getting nasty on the inside! Like I have dots of algae or something. The flow seems fine tho.

Chnage half of your water twice a week and you only need to test your water if you see something wrong.

The inside of the tubing should look like that.
